My hunt started with the wind blowing pretty hard. I had a button buck come in first. He was making his way toward me getting ready to cross a stream, when he spotted a ladder stand I had taken down last week and left laying across the stream. He stared at it a while, then crossed the stream to with in bow range. When he walked off I turned around and a doe was standing in my corn pile 15 yards away. I didn't even hear her come in. She stayed for a few minutes then walked off up a hill.
At 5 30 I look behind me to see a monster 10 point walking toward me on the same path the button buck was on. He gets to 40 yards away and sees the ladder stand. He starts head bobbing at it trying to figure out what it is. He needs to cross the stream and walk 10 yards for me to get an arrow in him. I watch and wait then he turns around and walks back to where he came from. NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I hit the grunt call but he was already gone. 10 minutes later I see him running and jump across the stream at 90 yards with a BIGGER buck chasing HIM. As they run up a hill I look to my right to see a basket rack 6 pointer chasing another button buck trying to hit him with his rack. Just 25 yards away chasing and grunting up a storm. The BB makes his way to my corn pile and the 6 point makes his way past me up the hill. After the BB stood in the corn pile for 20 minutes or so a doe comes in. As she approaches he folds his ears back and starts toward her. She is way bigger than him but he stands up on his hind legs and starts swinging his hoofs at her. AWESOME! He chases her off and while he feeds she watches at a distance. As light fades they both walk off. I move the F'n stand that spooked the buck, from where it was and set it up in a thick beech tree with in bow range of where all of the deer came from. Saturday night will be magical if things play out the same way.
This hunt was in my top 10 even if I didn't get a big buck or fling an arrow. It was non stop action.
I LOVE THE RUT!!!!!!!!(and pre-rut)
