shot 3 1/2 num. 5's with a 2 oz. load with my factory full choke and destroyed my turkey head target at 25 yrds. at almost 40 yrds. I was getting 4-5 bb's in the high neck & head region. Is this enough? does anyone have pics of what a good pattern should do at that range? Id like to be able to flop 'em no problem at 40 yrds, and maybe a little more. Thanks.

That's not enough. You should try some other loads and maybe look into a tighter choke.

no thats not enough i have a remington sps-t i shoot a 3 1-2 inch nitro turkey load #4 with a xtra super full and i had 24 pellets in a turkey target at 50 yards i would go to dicks and buy alittle tighter choke something like a .656 diameter

When I pattern my guns, i took the mossberg and benelli out. Shot at 50 yards and there was not enough bb's in the turkey's head to make me feel comfortable about it. Now there is no doubt I could do a body shot on a bird at that range and have a pretty good chance to kill it but then you have to look at messing up the fan and meat.
I shot my gun at 25 yards and it was a pretty dense pattern. I was real happy with it. I moved back to 40 yards and I got between 10 and 20 BB's in the kill zone. So I just told myself I was not going to shoot at anything over 40 yards. On my hunts as soon as I could see the first thing I did was break out the range finder so I knew when a bird came in where i could and couldn't shoot out to. made me real comfortable sitting there waiting.
I would recommend you try a couple chokes and even a couple of different loads. find the combo you like best. For me it was a 3 1/2 inch shell out of my Mossberg 835 with an extended extra full choke, got the best results out of it. but my Benelli just would not put enough pellets in the target to make me justify taking it out when the mossberg was out performing it. Good luck and hope my ramble helps..

tried a bunch of my guns 2 berettas 2 brownings 3 Remington's and a savage found the best pattern with 2 3/4 remington #5 out of my 1187 with a carlson turkey choke. also did pretty good the the new winchester extended range in 3 inch but at almost 2 times the price forget that. Read somewhere your max range should be when you drop below 8 pellets in the vitals and not just one shot but consistently

Ducksnbucks, take a look at the Tactical Turkey Gun post. That pattern might be a little above average for 40yds but as long as you’re close you’ll kill them every time.

Oh yah, you got the right choke now. I gurantee you see a big differance. I use a rem. 11-87 with xtra full and get 20 pellets in the kill zone at 40, even 10 to 15 pellets at 50. Good luck to you.
