So glad I took the day off to turkey hunt. There must have been four of them gobbling at once this morning at 5:30. My buddy forgot his hunting license so he left his gun in the truck and just tagged along. We started out great but couldn't get any of toms to come within gun range. By 8:45 we had nothing in the bag and the turkeys had shut up. We made one last effort and went to the area of the woods were we had heard them early and set up a hen and a Jake decoy called softly for about 1 to 2 minutes and stopped. I, meanwhile, got a text message and began to reply. After I sent my message I slowly lifted my head to check in the direction of the decoys and there were 2 toms standing 30 yards away, I could only see the top half of them because of the ravine they were in, one was in full strut and the other had spotted my head turn and lifted his head to see what I might be but it was too late. I had already put my sight on his red and blue head and was waiting for the other strutting tom to move out of my shooting lane. When the strutting tom moved a little left, I touched the trigger and sent 1 1/4 oz. of #5 nickel plated shot to the head of my alert target...he never knew what hit him. The strutting tom ran about 5 yds. up the hill and stopped, not sure what had just happened he just stood there. I finally stood up to go and retrieve my bird and then he left the scene in a hurry. I wish I had this problem of too many toms in my shooting all the time. What a great time I had this morning, it will sure keep me coming back for more.
