................real educated. After seeing lots of birds since opener and not having any luck calling them in, I set up a pop up right where they roost. I snuck in and called very lightly. The tom answered and came in. I had cut shooting lanes and he was walking right towards one. Strutting and drumming. My gun was shaking and so was I! A big tom with a beard that I swear almost was dragging the ground. I was thinking the whole time of what taxidermist to take him to while mesmorized by his white red and blue head. At 25 yards I put the fiber optic pin to his head, pulled the trigger and watched him run away, then fly. WHAT THE @%$#^@? I missed the bird and was sick to my stomach. Later that night I patterened my gun and at 25 yards, not ONE pellet went into the head of the target with my first shot. I have a full turkey choke I got from wal mart two years ago and it completly Sucks! Three shots later the most pellets in the head from any shot was seven. I put my full choke in and hit about eleven pellets in the head. I blame the gun for missing and myself for never patterning the gun. I had it patterned with a full choke and "assumed" that a turkey choke would be even tighter. I was wrong. I am now taking my grandfathers remington wingmaster back into the woods. I killed two turkeys with this gun and it doesn't even have any sights or chokes. But shoots a tight pattern.
I don't figure that tom will be roosting in that beech tree anymore but I'll try again on saturday. And yes I know I should have patterned the turkey choke, and it cost me a turkey.

That freaking sucks... but you have to go and shoot your gun to make sure all is right.. I shoot even gun i have before hunting them that year.. I know my single shot slug gun is ridiculously accurate but I still shoot it before gun season.. Well chalk that up to a lesson learned and i wish you all the luck in the world getting another chance at one..

yea, i was gonna get a turkey choke b.c thats all everyone talks about it seems... but theyre over-rated in my book. i have an beretta xtrema 2 and i swear i could kill em with a modified its so tight. I got the factory full and anything tighter would be impossible. you should try your factory chokes before getting con'd into buying a 80 dollar turkey choke. I have a 28" barrel which im sure has a lot to do with my patterns (duck gun). I dont even understand why everyone wants such a tight pattern, especially when most shots are like 40 yrds. Im new to turkeys, but maybe someone can clue me in. better luck next time.... but thats huntin i guess...

I have a 870 express and bought a choke called an undertaker for 28 dollars and could kill a turkey 50 yd's and under everytime . Shooting 3 inch federal 4 shot the jake i killed this year was 46 yd's and the turkey last year was 44 yd's both never took a step as mentioned on this site the BANG & FLOP did them in. But i also shot 4 different loads to find which worked out of my gun 2 different shells at 35yd's put less than 4 pellets in the head the federal at 40 yd's put 16 pellets in the head and neck at 50 yd's between 6-8 pellets.

I know this year was the first time i took it serious. I took my benelli and my mossberg 835 out to get them on paper and shooting 3 types of shells from 3 inch to 3.5 inch.. I have the extra full "turkey choke" for both. The mossberg out performed the benelli at 25 yards and at 50 yards. I would not feel comfortable shooting anything over 50 myself. But I took the mossberg both days i went last weekend and "BANG - FLOPPED" them both.. but it was a 20 and 17 yards shot.... I was more worried about getting the ole "TURKEY FEVER" and yanking the shot off and missing more than I was about the gun and shell being the problem.. lucky for me they were pretty easy shots both times and had lots of time and a good rest to get the hammer down on them.. I hope the ole Hairy Head had some lucky today.....
