Personally I hate ATV's, so I'm for this one.
Then how about "Personally,I hate bows/flintlocks/guns/Jeeps/Daves/widgets, let's tax/ban them!"
You disappoint me sir! Surely you've heard the old adage about how we all must hang together, or surely we will all hang separately?
I haven't been on a ATV since they all had just 3 wheels! And they had just come out at that!
And although being touted as a means to address damage/misuse/etc by ATVs, even the NRP is against it (unless, of course, they can use it to cry for more funding as well!)
And if such is the case, why include all the other vehicles, if not for the money it will generate?
And I also do not much understand their widespread use in hunting around here. Tickles me to see some fool lock the hubs on his lifted truck, drive 100 yards across a field to the edge of the woods, THEN offload his 4 wheeler just to drive another hundred yards into the woods! I know of guys who park UNDER their stands! Could've just walked to the stand in the first place in the amount of time it took to fool with all that, and made a whole lot less scent/noise in the process.
Heck, I've had kids ride under me on my property while I've been on stand. And I've strategically discouraged tresspassers by placing a few 16' 1"X6"s with a LOT of 16d nails under leaves around my place and the places of relatives. Heck, my youngest brother captured one and kept it until the boy came back with his father and the law!
So, I don't use, and don't much care for them either. I'm in my mid 40s and can still get along without one. I can see a place for the elderly, the infirm, and handicapped, but face it: for most, they are just toys.
That said, I see this bill for what it is:just another means to an end, to feed their addiction to OUR money.
Heck, after last year's, what 90%, increase in MD fishing licenses, the Budget and Taxation Committee is recommending another increase! And increased boat registration fees, etc They take until we say ENOUGH! And back it up with our votes.
And how they can justify titling and registering vehicles that are not used on public right of ways/lands is beyond me. But they don't need to justify it. As long as the sheep are more interested in who is on American Idol rather than WHAT is going on in Annapolis/DC, than we'll continue to get just what we deserve.
And just like the per round ammo tax that was defeated week before last, these things will keep popping up and sooner or later, they'll pass. How many were even AWARE of these bills? How many bothered to even write their reps, much less take a day off work to go and testify? (And in the case of the per round ammo tax, be told to be there to testify AGAINST the bill at 1:00 and then have it delayed to 7:30 pm?) Not to mention the "no hunting under 13 years of age" bill which was retracted. No agenda there!
How much concern can they actually have about our real problems when they have spent hundreds of hours this session, debating the official State exercise (walking? That just SCREAMS Maryland), official State cake (Smith Island layer), banning foie gras (goose/duck liver), changing Black History month from February to January AND February, limiting the selling of single cigars, and more such foolishness.
Again, I've got no dog in this fight, other than it is just another
gov grab, hell, overreach, into our wallets. And THAT pisses me off!
So while I can appreciate your dislike for ATVs, your attitude towards, and acceptance of, such blatant money grubbing just because it doesn't affect YOU (or maybe even delights you), well, lets just say it doesn't sit well with me.
There are a lot of things that do not interest me, or in which I have no desire to participate, but that doesn't mean I won't fight to save them from what I consider to be increasing Government intrusion, taxation, restriction, and general meddling.
