Don't know if we have any other birders on here or not, but there's some great stuff going with this event. Could be a cool way for some of you to earn points with the wives/girlfriends and still have an outdoors day...
Delmarva Birding Weekend April 26-29
The 2007 Delmarva Birding Weekend is set to bring hundreds of nature enthusiasts to the shore April 26-29 to enjoy a weekend of eagles, herons, warblers and egrets.
Guided by professional birders from around the East Coast, the walking tours, boat trips, bike rides, and canoe paddles will accommodate visitors from the curious nature lover to fowl fanatics. Last year, birdwatchers from 20 states flocked to the event.
A new Birders' Reception aboard the Cape May-Lewes Ferry will unite visitors with guides Thursday, April 26 at 4:30 p.m. for a pre-birding discussion of the weekends' events and the latest in Delmarva sightings and conservation initiatives.
This year, two new trips and a beer run augment the event. The "Birds of the Delaware Coast" will scour the Delaware shoreline near Prime Hook through a variety of habitats to see hundreds of birds and the "Natural Jewels of Johnson Bay" trip will sample the bay with a walk along a privately owned 336-acre farm protected with the state's Rural Legacy Program in 2001. To get things started right, Friday will offer a Beer, Birds, and Bocce get-together at the Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton where guides and birders can mingle and play some free bocce ball. The Delmarva Peninsula is internationally recognized as a migratory hot spot for both shorebirds and songbirds. For this reason, nearly one-third of the trips are already filled and all appear destined to be filled by mid-April as in past years. Additional trips may be added.
Current trips include six canoeing and kayaking sojourns: Moonlight Marsh Paddle down the remote stretches of Pikes Creek in Chincoteague Bay, a Thompson Island Paddle around Delaware's Thompson Island, Prothonotary Paddle which boasts two canoe trips on the Pocomoke River from Porters Crossing to Snow Hill; Warblers on the Water which includes two trips along the Nature Conservancy's cypress-filled 10,000-acre Nassawango Creek Preserve; Kingfishers on King's Creek which winds through marshes, forests, and fields in Somerset County; and Cypress and Songbirds which takes visitors down the remote Corkers Creek for green herons and red-shouldered hawks.
The weekend also offers four boat excursions: The popular Shorebird Explorer departs from Ocean City for a trip behind Assateague and Skimmer islands for loons, ponies and herons; Peregrine Falcon Watch explores the Deal Island Wildlife Management Area; the new Nature of Smith Island trip includes shorebirds, pelicans, a walking tour, and lunch and; the Tern to Tangier boat ride across Tangier Sound looks for wading birds and eagles and also includes lunch.
Night trips this year include: Night Birds of the Marsh at the EA Vaughn Wildlife Management Area along Chincoteague Bay; Assateague at Dusk which is rife with owls and rails; and the Owl Prowl which tiptoes tourists through the historical Pemberton Park in Wicomico County.
Day hikes this year offer seven choices: The Dark Forests of Newport boasts an eagle's nest and 150-year old forest; Warblermania traverses Nassawango Creek for woodpeckers and warblers; Eagles and Others offers a day hike through Pemberton Park to see a nesting pair of eagles and a variety of wading birds; Delaware's Coastal Birding Delights explores Assawoman Wildlife Area's bays, ponds, and forests; Cape Birding Escape at Cape Henlopen State Park checks out Gordon's Pond for waders and warblers, and Meandering Meadows reveals the secrets of the privately-owned Golden Quarter Farm on Ayers Creek.
The weekend also includes a Birders' Social at the Angler in Ocean City from 4-6 p.m. on Saturday.
The not-for-profit Delmarva Birding Weekend is sponsored by Delmarva Low Impact Tourism Experiences and supported by the Salisbury Zoo, Worcester County Tourism, Southern Delaware Tourism, Somerset County Tourism, Assateague Island National Seashore, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the Ward Museum, Maryland Coastal Bays Program, and the Rural Development Center at UMES.
