A fun hunt at Pintail Point this past Saturday. 25 Mallards. What a blast! Not the clearest picture in the world, but who said hunting guides were photographers

I'm the guy on the far right.......and please don't take my rant below in the wrong way. I'm merely voicing my opinion here (not sure if it was asked for) because for a moment during the hunt I felt really bad for shooting these "defenseless" ducks. I look forward to getting some feedback.
Agreed that this was just target practice and not real hunting. In fact, the actually hunt/process was really strange to me and I was actually disappointed by the set up. I think as a "real hunter" I was expecting more of a challenge and we didn't have that. As one of the other guys mentioned, the ducks are "trained" somehow to fly to the area and, as a result, any of us could have be wearing blaze orange and still got off a shot most of the time. Calling really wasn't necessary either and we definitely didn't need a MOJO....
I realize that we've all wathced the recent video on High Fence deer hunting and most of us agree that disease and drugging are two very ridiculous side effects with this process......I wonder, is hunting pen raised ducks any more acceptable?
Without doing research on the duck "living conditions", my answer is YES. The way I rationalized it was that we eat chicken, beef, fish, etc. everyday that was specifically raised to be consumed. These ducks are no different but instead just cost much more (added cost due to "shooting and retriever practice"). If done with animal rights in mind (to be debated & researched), killing pen raised ducks is no different in morality than buying meat at the grocery store. I just hope that the conditions for the ducks (before harvest) aren't terrible and if they are bad, my opinion would quickly change.
Bottom line....I think hunting in general is acceptable because we consume the meat. In this case, we've done just that. I'm totally pumped about having a bunch of duck in the freezer and feel this factor is just as important to the morality as the "sport/challenge." Contrary to "high fence hunting", we didn't pay 20 grand for a "huge rack" only; we are going to be cooking sweet dinners during Easter!!

I think this is something that you try once ,have fun, eat well and enjoy traditional waterfowl hunting more the next time you go..............................Who is in the dark glasses the guide or the professional hunter ?

Bunch of years ago,I was goose hunting on the upper Shore with a buddy who did some guiding for an outfitter. His boss DROVE right to our pit while we were in it,and said "C'mon. We got a party".
They had a blind on the edge of a pond surrounded by pine trees.Just out of sight from the blind, around a small cove, was a "tree fort" WAY up on phone poles. Ducks in cages were puled up into the fort. My buddy, the guide was to toss a few decoys out front of the shore blind, then call for a while. And every now and again I was to remove a duck or two from the crates, and toss them up in the air. They'd clear the pines by a few feet, see the pond and dekes, and lock and glide right down into the waiting guns. Hell, sometimes they'd still light AFTER everyone missed them!
And the paying sports really thought they were doing something. May be good for folks that can get out much, young kids/old folks,or a good way to work your dog,but it ain't quite my cup of tea.

This is all interesting to me. I have only been duck hunting once, (I know thats sad, but I would rather be in the woods hunting deer) I'm getting more and more into duck hunting and will try to go out more next year. I have never heard of any pin raised hunting and will do more research on it

In my opinion there is nothing wrong with it. It is legal and it's no different then Shooting pigs to eat or turkeys for thanksgiving dinner. I guess to each his own, there is probably no better way to practice shooting birds. And you get to eat what you shoot. Clay pigeons don't taste as good. It also looked like a lot of fun, and as far as ethics goes everyone's is a little different. Some people don't eat ALL the meat from an animal (ribs, heart, neck, etc) I personally shoot carp and don't eat them. I feed them off to scavengers living in the waters that I hunt them in. Now drugging an animal to then shoot it, well thats totally different.

My son got in to duck hunting this year and really enjoyed it. Taking for his b-day for the mallard hunt. I know its pretty cheese with the released mallards from 40 yards away, but he will have a blast. Going to shoot 30 mallards and 30 pheasants. I put some pics up afterwards. He needs the live target practice anyway.

Here are some pics from the hunt I took my son on this year for his BDay. He had a blast, but his shoulder was a little sore after shooting three and half boxes of steelshot.
