I want to give a run down of how my morning hunt went. Started at 5:30, slipped in and walked to a ridge inbetween two fields. Owls hooting in the distance. Heard the first gobble at 6:01, 200 yards away. Slipped down the hill to the turkey who was still roosted, and close to the property line but on the one I was hunting. Two or three other gobllers sounding off on someone elses property 500 yards away or more. Set up decoys 80 yards away, and started soft clucks and purrs. He would cut me off every time. Had him REALLY worked up and gobbling his head off for twenty minutes. THEN I hear two other hunters on the other farm, hit the slate as if it were a cymbol, making all kinds of noise. My bird had drawn them over to the property line and since I was soft calling they never heard me. That was the last gobble I heard. Waited an hour with out calling and heard the other hunters walking up and down the property line scratching away. THEN at 7:15 I catch a brown body out of the cornor of my eye, then another. Deer??? NO two Boxer Dogs running around 50 yards away, making noise and ruining an already ruined hunt! (thought about it believe me) Decide to call it a day so I don't spook any birds more than thay had been. In a field half way to my car I hear the screeching slate call from the MIDDLE of the farm. I go back into the woods and spend the next twenty minutes looking for trespassers which I never found. Wonder what tomorrow holds?

Sorry to hear about the trespassers Hardcore. I have had some problems with them myself but not today. The only problem I had today was no turkeys, never even heard one. Good luck to you on your next time out.

Thanks for reminding me of one of the WORST hunts of my life.Over in Calvert,10 or 12 years ago.Park by the barn, and start down the hill towards the bottom.Settle down on the edge of an oak flat that has done me well in the past. Woods start to come to life, and I hear a couple birds gobbling back up the hill,on a ridge near my truck! Can't get back up there w/o getting busted so I wait. See two fools coming towards me "whispering" loudly.I cup and flash my flashlight at them to let them know I'm already there. They stop, and discuss things for a while.Meanwhile I SEE another gobbler on roost maybe 60 yards away. They keep coming towards me,and the bird flies off.Ones up on the ridge are still gobbling like crazy. In a LOUD voice,w/o moving I holler, "YOU ARE TRESSPASSING". They stop again, head a little bit off,and try to cross over to my side of the creekanyway.I figure I'm done,so I pickup and head back up the hill.get to the top and the pair is STILL gobbling like crazy.I'm 60-70 yards across a ravine, with no way for us to meet.Meanwhile, these two idiots are still coming and "calling",if you can call it that.Sounded like they were walking on Cornflakes, with tin shoes, talking all the while. I get MORE pissed, and run off birds, before they get up hill. I then head back to my truck, start changing for work, when I hear BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM.Seconds later the roof of the barn I'm parked against is covered up with shot! (It's tight against the woods) There is a road about 3/4 of a mile thru these woods,so I figure they came from there.I jump in the truck and drive like hell to get around there.I'm seeing red at this point, and honestly don't know what I would do if I caught them.Luckily, they was no sign of any vehicle, but I wa alittle more "prepared" the rest of the season.Really ruined my season, though.
Then there was the time I about had to CUT some Ahole out of MY stand on the same property!
Found some Marlboro light butts IN my stand during deer season.Only other person hunting there other than me and my wife ,was one of my brothers, and he smoked regulars, but mostly chewed, and never when hunting. Few days later,I cut out of work early, drive over there, start down the hill, and see some big,old dude in orange coveralls IN my stand.I come up behind him and holler, "COMFORTABLE?" Turns looks at me,then just turns back w/o a word. I holler,"NICE STAND,AIN'T IT?" to which he replies "yep". "Then you ought to build your $#$% own on your own %^%$# property" I cleverly reply. Not a peep. I go back up the hill, get the FIL's Stihl and tractor and start back down.By then he was leaving.Hunted the rest of the year there, then dropped the trees with stands. I swear Calvert has to have some of the most self inflated, self important folks I have EVER had the misfortune to meet. And they all seem to be the ones who came from PG.
RANT OVER!

When we first got the mountain property, we had alot of trouble with poachers/trespassers. I had set up my decoy's on one of the old logging roads heading up the mountain, break of day, had at least 6 different birds gobbling to beat the band. Had them coming up out of the gully, when a tresspasser, walking on the logging road, came around the corner, saw my decoys and threw his gun up to shoot....He was going to shoot my decoy's. I gave him a whistle, he waved and continued to walk past towards my set up, when I "politely" informed him he was tresspassing, he decided to leave and go poach somewhere else. Needless to say, after the "discussion" about tresspassing, and "map reading" lessons, the birds were quiet. The next year in early March, while working on my ground blind, I met the same guy, "practicing" his turkey calling, unfortunatley for him he had his gun with him, and when he got back to his truck, he met my good friend, Game Wardent Jimmy Miller, and he had a couple of flat tires. It just wasn't his day I guess. Haven't seen him since.

Well, I was out again today, April 19th & it was another "no turkey morning" for me. Heard a whole bunch of gobbles, but they were all accross a creek on another property. Not even the first peep where I was hunting. Guess I'll be trying another spot tomorrow.

Hey, at least you are hearing gobbles. I have not heard gobble one. I keep going out in the evening and listening for them in order to try and figure out where they are roosting but no luck. I have been wondering if this past weekend's weather is to blame or if am bad luck. Who knows?

This weekend I'm hunting back at the property where I grew up with DHextremeCB. We hope to get him his first turkey. You know, after killing the "crab claw" this year he's looking for a new challenge. ha!
Anyway, so my Uncle hunted this same property yesterday and today. (I was secretly hoping he didn't get anything...no, just kidding, he took a friend of his who also hadn't killed at turkey before) So like most of you, yesterday they didn't hear a peep. Today though, he head like 8 or so birds and managed to call a 3 yr old Tom with a 11 in' beard in for this guy to bag....he said it was one heck of a show too!
Moral of the story...just like deer hunting you never quite know when the stars will align. Keep at it and you'll have your chance!

Mudduck, Don't feel bad, I've never roosted one. They just don't gobble as much at night when they fly up, you're better off to spend a few mornings listening before you plan to hunt - you'll hear 'em then.

Dave your story is way worse than mine. I'm concerned about tresspasers and poachers, but more with not knowing who else is in the woods. Like you said, someone sees some decoys, shoots, and your twenty yards away. I remember hearing that turkey hunting has the most death related accidents than any other type of hunting. Makes you real cautious.

I arrived at my parking spot at 4:45am, wind was calm at daybreak but nothing gobbling. Gary and I hunted until 11:56am and never even heard one We were running and gunning but more running than gunning was done. We saw some fresh dirt bike tracks on our 4-wheeler trails so I'm sure that didn't help our situation for today. It looked like we had some people trespassing yesterday or the day before. I can't babysit the property 24/7. Can't get back out to hunt before Wednesday so I guess I'll get another shot at those turkeys next season. We still enjoyed the hunt this morning, I'm not usually in the woods this time of year so I carried my pruning snips and trimmed as we walked, it helped to keep a slow pace and was productive at the same time. I'm sure the trespassers on the dirt bikes will appreciate it anyway. I want to thank all you guys for getting me motivated to get into turkey hunting, I'm hooked and can't wait to go again next season. Good luck to the guys who get to hunt the last few days. I can't wait till bow season!!

Forget the pruning snips, take along some clear 80 pound mono and string it across the trails about chest high. One good tumble off the bikes should keep your 'freinds' outta there!

Gary wants to use piano wire at neck level, I thought that was bit extreme. A low cable or some boards with nails flipped over and covered with leaves in different locations on our trails might make for a fun ride.
