Good luck Wahoo, but snow it looks like it'll be! Hope your boy gets a crack at one. Last year on our youth day I took the kid next door, 10 at the time, for his first turkey hunt. Had a bird scouted on public land for him, bird was gobbling hard on the roost and on the ground, came in fast, stood at 30 yards, but saw the boy move and took off before he could pull the trigger. Got him hooked though, was a heck of a first morning for anybody!
Maryland youth day is the 14th, you bring your boy across the state line for both of 'em???

I remember my oldest boy's first chance, we had a real nice tom come in quiet, till it got less than 10 feet behind the dead fall we had set up on.. It let out a gobble that made the hair stand up on the back of my neck.....I worked that bird for more than an hour, the whole time my boy sat with gun on knees, that bird never got more than 30 yards away throught the brush....Afterwards he said his legs, his arms and his hands all fell asleep...I could see him shake, unforturnatly, so did that gobbler, and he putted away, never got a shot.....The next weekend we had a double come in and he killed a real nice bird. Stuff like that you never forget...

Question, all i have is an old single barrell savage 12 guage to use this season. what kind of pattern do i need for turkey at 20-30 yrds for turkey??? After katrina i brought my brother my good 12 guage and my 9mm for the migrants from new orleans... I put a beer can up at 27 yards and there was a total of maybe 10 pellets in it using #4 is that enough

Get a big sheet of paper (I use the back side of a roll of wrapping paper), draw a circle/target in the center, and shoot at it from 20 yards back. What you want is a fairly dense pattern with no big holes or anything. It'd be nice to get 30+ pellets within an 8" diameter circle or so. More is better. If you're good at 20 yards, back it up to 25 and try again. Keep doing this until the pattern falls apart so you know what your range is. Also, try different loads. This year I'm using some Remington 2 3/4" loads of #6 in my 12 gauge. I have a solid pattern out to 35 yards with it, so I figure I'm golden.
