Have some friends and family out west still and been talking with an old buddy of mine recently about getting a hunt together. Pulled the trigger so to speak and looks like I am heading out west this Oct to catch up with some old friends and a bunch of family in SLC Utah.. After a few days there going to drive up to Idaho with my friend and hunt 5-7 days for monster mule deer.
Looking forward to another out west adventure and seeing a lot of friends and family I have not seen in 20-25 years. Should be a killer time

Awesome trip. I have a buddy in Jerome who keeps bugging me to come out and hunt. I've got to get out there someday soon.

Bought my tags the other day. Got two buck tags for use on either whitetail or mule deer. Also with the first tag I can shoot a black bear, cougar, or a wolf if I see one.. Super excited. Can't wait for the season to kick off..

How's the area you're heading too, there's been so many fires out there this year I'd be worried about that part?

As far as I know it has been unaffected. My buddy that lives out there has been to the area to check it out a couple of times and has not noticed anything to worry about. So hopefully that holds out for another month and a half.

So do you guys think Big Fox has shot anything yet out there or just exterminated the local supply of breakfast sandwiches??

So far, I think it has just been sandwich extermination, not just breakfast sandwiches though.

Well to say this trip was awesome would be an understatement. Had a freaking blast. Was able to see some childhood friends and a bunch of family and hunt mule deer for a week. The hunt started out on the 10th of Oct. I was near Soda Springs ID and staying at my buddies place. He is well versed in the area and knew where we would be going to hunt. Lots of options up there with different terrain in each one. For the first 5 days and 4 evenings we tried several places. I was able to see some decent bucks and a couple hammers but not get into position for shots. On the second day we hiked up a couple miles and got into an area that was known by my friend to hold some good deer. As the sun came up I found a nice buck on the mountain side grazing. I cut the distance to about 300 yards and knew I wouldn't be able to get any closer. As I readied for my shot another shot rang out and the deer I was setting up on took off running up the mountain. I didn't realize that one of the guys that was with us has also seen this buck and was just below me on the mountain and took a shot. As the buck ran up the mountain I cracked one shot off and he disappeared into the pines. I then met up with the other guy, Mike, and we discussed what had happened. We were both confident his shot had hit and mine had probably missed. We glassed the area and found the deer bedded in the pines. We waited about 40 minutes and Mike decided to hike over. I told him I would hold tight and if he got up I would try and anchor him. Mike told me to move down to another vantage point and apparently when we were moving the deer was either beamed up to a space ship or spontaneously exploded because when Mike got there, there was no deer and no sign. Very strange. I seen a couple more deer in the coming days but no shooters. On the evening of the 5th day, I discussed with my buddy Jared that I wanted to try and fill one of my tags even if it was on a small buck to give the meat to a family friend in Utah that was on hard times and I told I would get him a deer. Jared had a place near his property that routinely held deer but usually no big bucks and I said that would do. We headed out that evening and got into position to glass. We quickly located a few deer and seen in the bunch there were 2 small bucks. Either would do for what I wanted so we game planned and got into position. It was about a 250 yard shot and I was in a great spot with my Savage 300 Win Mag. The small buck turned broadside and I let the bullet fly. It hits its mark and I had filled one tag. We got him loaded up and were heading back to do the real work and Jared told me to keep my eyes open cause "you never know"... On the way I look over and see two BIG bodies about 1000 yards away. We glass them and Jared (who had left his rifle at camp to ensure we would not only see a buck but probably 2 or more monsters, as he put it) was right. 2 big bucks were grazing without a care in the world. We quickly came up with a plan and made our move. We closed the distance to about 300 yards and the deer began to get a bit spooky. A 3rd big deer had appeared by this time and was probably the biggest but I only had a good broadside shot at one of them. I decided it was him and I took the shot. The bullet hit hard and he buckled. As he stumbled towards the thick cover I jacked another round in and took aim. He again came broadside and I let another round fly. It hit home and he was down. My buck had broke off the left side front of his antler but he is still a 4x5. Gives him character in my eyes.. Jared was right. Him leaving his gun behind paid dividends.. LOL We got to him and I was truly pumped with a great mule deer and what an adventure. I had an absolute blast and reconnected with a great friend of mine for over 30 years that I have not seen in over 25. What a great hunt and great time. Pics First 2 are views from my friends place. My buck in the next 3 pics A buddy of mine with a hammer 3 by 3 Last one is my childhood friend and his son with his sons first 5x5 mulie.
