What an emotional youth day yesterday in Southern MD hunting with my good buddy Dylan. We got in the stand early 0500 am and right away at first shooting light we had a button buck and yearling doe by the ground blind. I told Dylan we were going to hold out for a buck and even in the cold weather this kid hung tough and at 11:45 we hear a buck chasing a doe heading our way. I tell Dylan get your gun up and here comes this big boy at the time I thought 8pt buck and a real GIANT 10pt (easy 140") buck and they both run up to our ground blind at 40 yds. Well Dylan has got some serious buck fever going on, shaking and breathing heavy and to make a long story short he shot over the 10 points back and after quickly reloading hits the other good buck far back, he mule kicks and takes off dragging a front leg. We give it some time and find spotty blood so we back out and finish the rest of the hunt a bit dejected but we really had a ton of fun and Dylan learned quite a few lessons about deer hunting that day. Dylan's mom picks him up to go home that night but before we part ways I tell Dylan and his mom I'm not giving up on that buck and will look in the morning. Well as my close friends know I didn't sleep well that night and really felt upset for Dylan and more so myself for in some crazy reason thinking I let him down. Well 0600 am I am up and 0700 am I am back at the property looking for this buck and well by 0800 I found his buck 100 yards from the last blood, a big mature 7 point bruiser and being humbled myself Dylan made a good shot on this buck, a bit far back but center mass, destroyed the liver and I believe either smashed the front opposite shoulder or part of the spine. No exit wound so that explains the lack of a good blood trail. I really can't explain how proud I am of this kid, and he is a great kid!! I was there when he killed his first deer and now his first buck. CONGRATS!!!!! to Dylan on a great first buck, you earned him my friend.
