I heard it can take a few hours or days to lose the velvet. Looks like no velvet bucks for us this year. Also heard they start losing velvet Sept. 1. Maybe we will get a Sept 1st opener like some other states one day.

Each deer is different. It is very possible to take a buck in velvet in early bow season.

hardcore, I heard that somewhere too... Maybe we heard it at the same time! Every deer is different but I have seen two on my corn pile and both had no velvet. So, if you do get one with velvet...... does it peel off?? What happens?

IF YOU SHOOT A DEER IN VELVET YOU CAN PEEL IT OFF YOURSELF OR IF IT HASNT STARTED THE SHEDDING PROCESS YOU CAN GET IT FREEZE DRIED FROM YOUR LOCAL TAXIDERMIST. ALSO THE TIME OF YEAR THE SHEDDING PROCESS TAKES PLACE DEPENDS ON WHEN THE DEER WAS BORN. EARLY FAWNS=EARLY SHEDDING, LATE FAWNS=LATE SHEDDING. IT ALL HAPPENS AROUND THE SAME TIME DUE TO THE DECREASE IN DAYLIGHT, WHICH MAKES HOROMONE LEVELS START TO INCREASE.

I could have shot a small 6 ptr. in full velvet last year but I passed. It was the first week of bow and I wish I would have taken him. Dont get that chance too often....

my dad (has a mulie) and my wifes uncle (has a whitetail) both have full velvet.,
it can be treated and look just as it does when the deer are alive.. it is pretty cool..
Also i have a friend whos father shot a real big 8 point a few years back that had velvet on his horns in shotgun season..... looked like dried bananna peels hanging off but gives the deer real character.. pretty neat

The last buck looks like he'll be a nice big buck next year for sure. I have killed a few three pointers in my day. I don't think its much different than a spike or four pointer. Maybe those grow up to be 9, 11, or 13 pointers.
