DNR stakeholders meeting coming up in a few weeks has a few new proposals for turkey hunting, all fall/winter stuff. First proposal moves the fall, western MD hunt back a week, into November, to avoid the bear hunt week.
A second proposal calls for a new, 7 day late winter hunt, statewide, beginning the 3rd Saturday in January. No rifles, bag limits will be part of the fall limits (one either sex, doesn't count toward spring bag limit). They're hoping the late timing will avoid baiting conflicts with deer hunters.

I don't know if it's the storm coming in or what, but I was seeing turkeys out everywhere today! Lots of swinging beards, too.
What's everyone else think on the possible winter season? Yes/no? Hunt it or not? Wait for spring?

I'm for it - I think the limit should be 2 turkey a year, no matter when you get em!!!

After the public meeting in Wye Mills last night I can say that if you want the winter season you NEED to go online and post comments supporting it. There were only 10 people in the turkey room part of the meeting, but they were all vocally against it. The biology certainly seems to support that the turkeys can handle the extra harvest, I think it's worth a try for a year or two, at least, to see how it goes.
