Anybody been out and tried them in the afternoons?
Planning on it one day this week. Boy I've been taking is having it rough, they're running us in circles. Going to get in the roost area for the last few hours and see if we can catch them coming back in and show them something different.
Don't these dang hens ever nest?! Still seems to be a load of them luring the gobblers off in the mornings...

Dave, I gave it a shot last Friday for the last 2 hours of shooting time. No luck. I figured at worst case I would rule out where not to try at first light.

I went last Thursday and had one come in silent but no shot. He was a HUGE bird! Had never seen a beard like that before either! Then I had one gobbling his head off across swamp. Not allowed to cross cause not property I can hunt on. He had to have gobbled at least 70 times! It was the most I have ever heard a turkey sound off! Other than that, I have not been out. Going out this Sunday eve though to place that sees the turkeys in the field around 330 consistently.

I know last year I called one in around 4:00p.m. on the last day of the season. It was hot and sunny. I heard him shock gobble at some crows and he came in behind me to a spot where I had seen him strutting the previous week. I tried to call little and wait him out but ended up hearing him gobble way off after about ten minutes. I began a fighting purr series and OMG! He came running back in, gobbling his head off. I didn't dare move to face him and thought he would just swing around the corner of the field edge I was on. He still never showed. He ended up completely circling me and went to roost on the other side of the field. He continued to gobble right up to dark as I was walking out.

Well we were close, but not good enough. The birds came in and flew up to roost, but they ended up coming in from the other way and were still 80-100 yards away to the roost trees. Neat to be there when they were flying up for the night though!
