What a hot issue! We could surely debate this one to no end! I personally feel that you should be allowed to hunt on sunday just like fishing.. etc.... I go to church and think that the church or blue law or whatever should have no say in this. Free will! If we go hunting on a sunday morning I am not going to hell. On the more serious side..... Some guys chose hunting over family. I do it on the days we are allowed to hunt on sundays and my wife understands! Women will never understand why we hunt! Granted, hunting for some is only a couple of weeks and for some 4 months. Once again.... Free Will! I say open it up for 7 days a week or take wednesday out of the picture. That can be the animals day of rest! If something gets started I am in!!

Couple of things. First, Great responses! Second, to add to Blue Laws, Worcester County (Wicomico's neighbor) still has them. For instance, The Harley Shop just outside of Ocean City cannot even display the price of any motorcycle on Sundays! I'd be fighting that one all the way to the bank! Third, here is how I lobbied in NY for Sunday hunting. I was in High School still, but our local rod-n-gun club got together with other sportsmen and took a tour bus to Albany. There was always some week in February when issues about hunting, hiking, state lands or whatever where on the chopping block. We had meetings with various representatives from different districts. The meetings were small group discussions. I think we were mostly used because as students, we argued that our only opportunities to hunt were Saturdays and that our parents only had weekends off. Whatever the case, I’m sure there is a similar format in Annapolis. We might have to get some sort of petition rolling or something along those lines, I'm just not that well versed in how to get those things done. (Should have been listening in my government class!)

My brother's sister-in laws- father is a state senator. I'll ask him what steps are needed to be taken in order to further this. I don't understand either. Maybe the same blue law that says Virginia can't sell liquier on sudays? If we were all amish I would understand, but damn were on the internet. MD needs to get up to date and leave this horse and buggy law in the 1900's. And yes my wife would also hate this law. Maybe the ones who created the law were wifes who wanted a day for the husbands to do yardwork?

I live and hunt in Wicomico County, which does not allow Sunday hunting. I could be wrong, but it doesn't seem to be a management tool more as it does an ethical issue. Does anybody know the story, and if so, who can I start writing to get the laws changed.(My license costs the same but I get to hunt less?) Also, what are some of your opinions? I know some believe that the animals need a day to rest or others believe Sunday hunting does not rest well with the Church? 100% of the reason you don't have it in Wicomico (or Worcester or Somerset) is because of your State Senator, J. Lowell Stoltzfus. He was the one who got that area exempted from the original Sunday hunting Bill. Mainly because of his farmer cronies, the older farming community doesn't want Sunday hunting in most areas. Personally I don't want Sunday hunting, but only because I'm weak willed and selfish. Quit your job and hunt the other 6 days a week (like I do ;D) if you want to hunt more, some of us need a day to catch up on sleep!! When it's allowed I can't help myself and I have to go in the woods. Cutting out a weekend day eliminates a load of pressure.

I have property in Maryland and Virginia. Virginia takes the cake for hypocracy in hunting laws. We have no sunday hunting, we cannot bait, but in the county that I hunt, we can legally kill two deer a day from september bow season, to the end of the season in January. They complain about the overpopulation of deer and the problems with the black bears east of the blue ridge mountains. You want to kill more deer? Make it easyer to hunt them. You want to control the bear population, open a season for them. I don't get it. In Fairfax county, the deer population is out of control, they don't even have a gun season in Fairfax. Not enough bow hunters to keep population in check, so they use our tax dollars to pay professional hunters to jacklight them at night. Let us bait, let us hunt on sundays and lower the price for license and you will kill more deer.
