Finally getting around to trying some tanning. Ordered some Curatan from Van d**e's and did a hind and back half of a stag hide with hair-on. Still in the final drying and breaking stage, but looking pretty good. Started a small whitetail and sika today in the first bath for hair-off - need some leather for shooting bags - hope they turn out as good.

boy you sure got jokes.. I just have to remember that my guide service was horrible and I cannot control the fact that he scared all the deer away with his morning coffee breath.. That poor lil fella the deer hunter got must have had a broken nose....

Haha fox.......I've done 6 so far this year. A lot of work, but something to be proud of when you are done. Think I am going to do every deer that I get for the rest of my time....The sika I got with you during Blackwater shotgun is next. ;D Wanted to get some practice in before I took that one on.

Here is the fleshing pole I made. This is where most of the work is done. Don't have any in that stage right now, but here's one before I put the final touches on it...(Oil) One in the oiling process A couple of finished hides

That dark color goes away once you stretch it. You end up with an off-white colored hide.

Pretty cool Frank, you've got the setup there. I did the fleshing on the first two with just a knife on a table, got to go back and sand off lots of membrane when they finish drying. Put up a landscape tie and got out the drawknife on the next two I'm doing, that worked MUCH better. You interested in trying braintanning? I've got the Deerskins into Buckskins book, eventually going to try that (you can use eggs instead of brains) but it's a lot more work. Makes the softest skins for clothes, though. Check out www.braintan.com if you want some info on it.

I've been using a McKenzie tanning product. Seems to be working pretty well, but I'm sure I'll try the brain thing at some point - just not on the sika I've been waiting to do. I couldn't imagine trying to flesh on just a table with a knife. Sounds pretty tough.

Lime or baking soda will take the hair off also.

I'm starting to realize to increase soaking times in cold weather, been in the lime solution for 4 days and still got some spots the hair isn't slipping yet. Back in for another day.
A pressure washer, huh? Sounds like a good idea, but can't imagine cleaning up that mess!
