Current law:
Snapping Turtles- OPEN YEAR ROUND- May not use hook and line, trotline, bow and arrow, spear, gig or gig iron or any device that would pierce any part of a turtle. May not catch or attempt to catch in tributary waters of Charles Co. from 4/15 - 5/31

6"- Sep 1 thru Oct 31 - Measured across the greatest length of the free edges of the plastron (bottom shell) parallel to the midline from the front of the terrapin to the back. May not possess, destroy or disturb diamond-back terrapin eggs. Provisions relating to size do not apply to anyone who owns not more than 3 diamond-back terrapins kept as pets.
Proposed law:
Terrapin- Permanent- The purpose of this action is to prohibit the catch, sale and possession of diamondback terrapin except for permitted scientific or educational uses and for permitted aquaculture operations. Possession of terrapin as pets would be limited to those currently in possession and must be registered with the Department prior to August 1, 2007. April 13, 2007 April 25, 2007 at

Title: Diamondback Terrapin - Take and Possession
Note: This Bill is crossfiled as Senate Bill 532.
Description:This Bill repeals the requirement that the Department of Natural Resources prepare a fishery management plan for diamondback terrapin. In addition, the bill prohibits the take or possession of diamondback terrapin for commercial purposes. It prohibits the possession of greater than three diamondback terrapin for noncommercial purposes. It repeals the requirement that the Department adopt specified regulations for the catching of terrapin, and it requires the Department to adopt regulations for the conservation of diamondback terrapin.
