Well it's time to begin the madness again, started ordering parts for the next longrifle I'm going to build. ;D Doing a Lehigh style this time, different stock shape than the last build I did, and I'm planning on all silver trim pieces, plainer wood with a strong red staining, and lots of engraving (big challenge, from the little bit I've tried engraving is slow, tedious and frustrating). Going with a 13/16" straight octagon barrel on this one, though I'm still wavering between .40 and .45 caliber - .45 could still use on deer, .40 would be targets and limb bacon. Ordered the lock and trim today, so I'll be working on that for awhile and have some time to decide on the bbl... This is the stock style, just imgaine silver trim and a different patchbox style...

C'mon, stop fooling with all that old stuff and get you a nice, new SMOKELESS Savage "muzzleloader" with a 4X12X50 scope! ;D ;D ;D
I keep wanting to build something along the lines of a Vincent or a plain, iron furniture, southern style halfstock.
Instead, I'll just live vicariously through your builds. It's easier. Cheaper too!
Keep the pics comiong.I really enjoyed the last one. ALMOST got me off my @$$ and back into the shop. ;D

Great movie, I watch Last of the Mohicans at least every other week. You don't have to build one Dave, I may sell this next one when I get done, not sure yet, but for you it sure WON"T be cheap after that smokeless comment!!

When I was in high school I wanted a long rifle but couldn't find one I could afford on a movie theater salary! I settled on a CVA .58. It still looks great, except for some tarnishing of the brass.

Reed, it doesn't take much to polish the brass back to a luster if you want it that way 0000 steel wool, then a bit of polish. Got lucky on my parts. Wanted a specific patchbox one of the supply companies had in thier catalog, a real fancy one attributed to an original builder, but they didn't have it on-line when I went to order. Was afraid they stopped making it, but a quick call and it's on the way.

I just found a 20 year old pic of me, my first ML, and a deer. Brass is BRIGHT and so is wood. Two decades of oil soaking in the wood and it's about black as well. Heck, I was even young and bright! ;D
Heck, I was even young and bright! ;D
We'll give you half credit on that statement Dave, but without further conclusive proof the bright part will have to remain a question mark!

I don't mind the tarnishing, I was just commenting that even though I didn't spend big money, I still have a gun that hasn't fallen apart. One of the things I was worried about when I bought it was how bright and shiny it was. Not always good when you are trying to sneak around.

Getting parts arriving in boxes on the doorstep, today all the German silver trim showed up. ...the fancy Rupp patchbox. Now that I've got it I'm not so sure how much fun it's going to be inletting all those little cuts and floral edges, much less engraving it. Notice also how dark the trigger gaurd and butt plate are - they are castings and I'm going to be spending some time with files, sandpaper and steel wool.

Here's a good example of the castings. This is the back of the sideplate, the whole thing looked like this when I first got it, very rough... ...this is the good side of the sideplate after I worked for an hour or two with a file, then sandpaper and a sanding block, finally with steel wool. Now it gleams!
