Anyone been squirrel hunting? I was down in VA where I have a place to hunt deer and saw many more squirrels than used to be there. I'm wondering if they've had a chance to rebound from the last Hurricane that hit us.
Anyone else seeing more squirrels that normal?

i dont think the hurricane really effected them. I always see tons of squirrels everywhere. Not just hunting, but in my yard and driving down roads. Ive always thought there are to many tree rats.

We actually have less this year than in years past. Mainly because we REALLY lit them up last year during February. Glad to see the state finally extended the season- they're an underutilized resource. (Plus, they drove me CRAZY all deer season, so it was payback time)
When I was a kid, there was basically 6 days of deer season, and months of squirrel, so I hunted squirrel a LOT. Now with over 4 months of deer season, i find it hard to chase them instead of deer.

I've always got tons of squirrels. Seems like the greys have risen in numbers the last few years and I've got less Delmarva Fox sqirrels though, so I'm going to have to hit them late season so the big dummy squirrels have a chance to hang on. Actually looking forward to it for late season, gonna try and head shoot 'em with the flintlock.

"Dummy Squirrels" thats funny. I saw one two years ago. Twice the size of a gray maybe three times bigger. It was almost white in color, and as clumbsy as could be. Like a big dummy squirrel. I almost shot it to mount it, (I had never even heard of a delmarva fox squirrel) thought it was a freakishly large albino gray squirrel. Good thing I didn't and found out what it was later that day.

Almost squashed a Delmarva over near Vienna (Lewis Landing) with a 10 wheeler a few years back. Ran under us and somehow made it across.Glad I wasn't driving! Here's a reddish squirrel I killed in Calvert a couple years ago. Wish I'd kept it.

I plan on getting my son out squirrel hunting this year. It will be hist first experience hunting. I have a .410 that he is able to shoot pretty good so I figure we can pop a couple. I loved squirrel hunting as a kid because I could move almost as much as I wanted and never scared them away. It is much more fun for kids because you almost always come home with something, unlike deer hunting! Hopefully this will get him hooked and next year he can learn to shoot a bow and go deer hunting with me.

Personally, I think there are more tree rats due to the lack of tree rat hunters.

davep, do we have less in the state generally because of the longer season or do you have less in your area because YOU lit them up?

I hunted a few other places Thanksgiving week and saw plenty. I think I just put a hurting on them here. Plus, looks like most places had a huge acorn crop this fall. I was going to wear a hardhat......
One of my brothers told me he has NEVER seen so many as this year, and they killed over 100 there last year.
It's rare to run into other folks after them. But with bow season so long, I do sometimes run into them, and they generally ain't happy about it. I TRY to avoid them; if I see other cars in the lots, I'll hunt elsewhere.
