It never occurred to me that it may be printed. I thought I was just writing to the lady who covered the event in hopes she would persuade someone to print a correction. If I thought it would be printed I would have spent more time on it.

Reed,
Can you post what you wrote here in the forum? I don't live out that way and obviously don't have access to the paper. I'd like to see your letter.

Ms. Breck,
I am concerned about the attendance numbers for the Southern Maryland Hunting and Outdoor Expo that were stated in the Maryland Independent. I attended the expo and can honestly say there were at least a couple thousand in attendance. I am worried that the incorrect numbers could affect the willingness of local businesses to participate in future expos and deter residents from attending similar events in the future.
From all I have heard this was a first of its kind in the area and the vendors and organizations that participated were extremely happy and surprised with the attendance. There were hundreds in line before the gates opened at 9am. I believe the head count was nearly three thousand.
The success of this event is important to local outdoorsmen for several reasons. Among them are the ability to talk to the local Department of Natural Resources representatives about the local rules and regulations regarding the areas they hunt and fish. It also gives young hunters the ability to sign up for hunter's safety classes so that they may safely and legally enjoy the outdoors. At this single event the DNR Hunters Safety team filled three classes in only hours, something that they claim is nearly impossible to do.
I was hoping that your report of the event would encourage residents and local businesses to participate next year. Unfortunately the attendance numbers you reported will probably do just the opposite. Local businesses that did not participate may not think it is worth their time since only a few hundred people attended.
I highly encourage you to print a visible correction to the attendance numbers and contact the organizers of the event for a more realistic head count and description of the day's highlights. There were thousands of dollars worth of merchandise given to attendees for just buying a ticket.
Respectfully,
Reed Smith La Plata, Md
