Plenty of birds gobbling today, just none on the property we could hunt. Little boy from next door went with me, he at least had fun hearing 'em. But boy the skeeters have hatched down here, it's bug suits and spray from now until November!!!! Eased our pain in the ponds afterwards, tore up the fish Kept 8 crappies, 2 pumpkinseeds and 2 bass, threw back a bunch more. Kid ended the day with a 14" crappie (and I left the dang camera at home today!!! ).

Got in around 5:30. Went to my normal place in the woods to wait till I here a gobble, then go to set up. Heard a hen about 5:35, she was close maybe sixty yards. Set decoys up ther and put my buddy on a tree and I dropped back twenty yards to call. The gobbler sounded off at 5:45 with two others gobbling 300+ yards away. I called softly the hen keopt trying to out do me. She was loud and agressive and the gobbler was going CRAZY. 25- 30 gobbles in twenty minutes. Well needless to say she won the turkey calling contest and when she flew down she proceeded to lead him away from us. Waited a little and tried to cut them off but they had disappeared. Went to set up on the other two who gobbled all morning till 7:45 but they were already on another property. Guy who was with me had a blast and I did as well. Good Times.

Hunted some public land in Montgomery County Saturday. Friday night was spent at BassPro buying camo for my girlfriend. After me pleading, she finally made it in the woods. Unfortunately, the place was loaded and I picked the wrong spot to set up. Never heard a turkey. After an hour and a half, we left; her feet got wet. All in all, it was a good trip and she doesn't mind it. I think I got a new hunting buddy. -- B

Don't know if thats good or bad. I would love to have my wife hunt with me and experience the thrill of the outdoors. But on the other hand, I like the fact I can get away in my own element and have some me time. Could go either way.

Yeah,I thought it was cool.At first. Her Daddy had all girls and raised 'em like boys: tractors, guns, hunting. So we hunted together.A lot.then the kids started coming. And guess who set home with them?

4/48/07 - I'm hoping to harvest a bird off of my parent's place in the Northern Neck of VA. The morning starts of with three gobblers going off. Two are closer than the third.
I move down toward the bottom next to our creek and set up between the two of them. I'm set up in time to do a fly down cackle...they like it. They continue to gobble at each other. All seems well until they fly down. The one bird never makes another noise. The other bird makes a few courtesy gobbles. Moved and set up on a field to catch em returning back to find me later in the morning but I never really had a chance.
4/29/07 - I'm hoping to figure out what these gobblers are doing. I'm walking down to the bottom in the back of the property and it's 5:05 am. All I brought with me was an owl call and my younger cousin. He'd never really heard a bird gobble before. We're slowly make our way to where they were yesterday but stop to hear the first gobble before getting "too" close. At 5:36 am (yes, no kidding) the first gobble goes off. The bird is back in the same area and we start closing ground. On the way we...get startled by turtle dove who is on her nest.....not cool when your senses are on overload, See raccoon climbing up a tree, and bust two hens of the roost. The first one spotted us and just hauled tail feather. The second hen must have been half asleep when we were walking up because she took her time and did the whole fly down cackle for us. We got right underneath them before the first one busted. It was pretty awesome!!
Long story short...we get about 70 yards from the bird and sat down to see what he'd do. Ended up flying down, walking within about 40 yards (gobbled really loud and startled my cousin) I thought he was going to walk right past us but he ended up rolling out shortly after that.
We drove around and saw a Tom strutting on the next piece of property over. He had four hens with him.
Bottom line, the birds are pretty quiet in VA right now. They have plenty hens to keep em busy for a week or so.

Heard two gobbling this morning & set up on them, but they decided to fly down the other way. Ended up seeing a longbeard alone in a field, but couldn't get close enough to him to seal the deal.

Went at my place, once again no gobbles within a mile. On to public later in the morning, sat in the blind in a tore up spot from 9-12, never saw or heard a bird. I think I'm going to have to just randomly grab kids off the street and take them along for luck - that seems to be the only time I see turkeys this year!!!
