There is a nice article in the Md Indep about some up and coming clay target shooters from our area. These kids start practicing in Oct or Nov and shoot 100 plus targets a week. The headcoaches of the the program are Frank Fruh and Ray Pierce both local guys who donate untold hours of their valuable time. The Scholastic Clay Target Program and the 4-H Shotgun program are great ways to make lifetime shooters out of our kids. The program goes thru their high school years .

My son is almost 9 years old and I want to get him shooting. We don't have any property to shoot on and the ranges can be very crowded around us. Do you know where they practice?

Normally at Metro Gun Club near Malcolm not far from the Dr Mudd House.Currently the program is on summer break. It normally starts in Oct or Nov.I would suggest contacting the 4-H office in La Plata and have them notify you of the starting date/ kickoff meeting.Their # is 301-934-5404 .It is an excellent program with trap, skeet and sporting clays being taught. The 4-H portion of the program normally ends in March with a state meet at PG sports center in Glenndale off of Goodluck Rd then it goes to the Scholastic Clay Target Program that ends at the Md State Trap Shoot in June.I am an asst coach and can`t say enough good things about this program. It will amaze you at how well these kids can shoot.

How well should they be able to shoot to consider joining. I know the answer will probably be "It doesn't matter" but I don't want to waste my childs time fighting to hit a moving clay when he still has trouble consistently hitting stationary clays.
What guns are these kids using? I am guessing probably a 20 gauge, but I remember I learned to shoot clays with a .410.

The answer is old enough to be able to hold a gun safely and comfortably ,shoot it 25-50 times in a 2 hr session. Most new shooters use a 20 gauge some a 12 gauge .We haven`t had any .410`s yet.The majority of the targets are 16 yard trap targets and a .410 doesn`t allow for much of a margain of error. It only has a 1/2 oz of shot in a target load.

I am in the 4-H shooting program. Our team has the best instructors in Maryland, if not the whole country. On my first day to shoot practice, I could not hit one target. This will be my fourth year in the program. I am now getting consistent 20's. It has also helped me in deer hunting and waterfowl hunting because it has taught me to lead my target and have a faster reaction time on deer.I would recommend it for any kid who wants to hit more ducks or deer. I've always have had fun in it.

I think every county 4-H program has a shooting group set up, most have it for archery too. I know they've got both here in Dorchester, guy that runs it takes the top MD kids out to the national shoots every summer, I think they went to South Dakota this year. Great program for kids who want to learn or for those who want to shoot seriously, either way. I believe it's 16 and under?

I think the max age is 18 as of Jan 1 of every year (that`s close). Conrad Arnold is the guy you`re speaking of. He`s from Dorchester and is head of 4-H Shooting sports for Md. Also one heck of a guy. Anything involving Md youth shooting in some way shape or form he either organized it ,planned it or was there as it was being done. The program is already half over (in Charles Co) with the State Shoot at Greenbelt on Nov 10 .The 4-H Shooting also has a fundraiser at a sporting clays facility in April ,in 2007 it was at Pintail Point ,good food ,lots of door prizes and a lot of fun especially when most of the kids outshoot the adults. Most of them aren`t shooting clunkers either. No Kreigoff`s in our club but Beretta`s ,Browning`s and a herd of Remington 1100`s. I`ll make sure and post the results of the State Shoot and let everyone know of the fundraiser date .In case you haven`t figured it out redneckhunter is one of my kids and he`s in his fourth year in the program.
