I guess one of my buddies finally got tired of hearing my hunting stories and decided he wanted to try it for himself. I told him to take the hunter's safety class (my barometer if someone is serious) and I'll make it happen from there. Long story short, he accompanied me for his much anticipated first hunt on the opener Saturday. Friday night, we went over shot selection and watched a few youtube videos of hunts (also so he could see what a sika deer looked like). I also showed him a map of the property and where the stand was that he would be walking to in the dark. He was a little apprehensive about walking to the stand in the dark, but I figured my plan was pretty failsafe.
Around 7:30 I heard a shot from his direction. I excitedly texted him and he said he got one. Pressing him for details (I guess he didn't think they were important) he said it had antlers (or as he called them "horns"). I was very happy for him and guessed he had shot a spike that I had on trailcam. About an hour later I texted him to feel free to shoot a doe if he liked. No sooner had I sent the text and I heard another shot from his direction. Sure enough he had his second deer down. I told him to hang tight while lonelyduckhunter and I went to check on him. Much to our surprise when we walk up on him this is what we find.
I couldn't believe it, the first deer the guy ever sees is a droptine 10pt that walks out broadside at 50 yards. He dropped him in his tracks and then proceeds to shoot a sika hind an hour later. He pulled off the ole Dorchester double. We tried to explain to him how lucky he was, but I just don't think he has the context yet. Nonetheless, I was really happy for him as he's had a rough year losing his Dad a few months back, having his sister diagnosed with breast cancer, and accidentally chopping off two of his toes and having them reattached this past summer. I told him his luck is starting to change.
