Haven't been on in a while, mainly because I was out of work for 3 weeks. But I wanted to chime in now that I am back. Been a decent year so far. Still trying to get my kids on a deer. Been taking them as much as possibly and had a couple sightings but no shots for them yet. But they seem to really enjoy it and that makes me HAPPY. I got a decent doe with a bow a few weeks ago at a buddies farm. He told me he had them patterned and boy did he. He was sitting in the blind with me videoing and told me what time they would make their way to the corn pile. Right on time here they came and I was able to thump a nice doe at 22 yards. Fast forward to Muzzleloader season I went to the shore lease to hunt opening morning, crashed at Ospreys place. (thanks buddy) and was at tthe lease bright and early.. about 730 I look down the road and here is a decent spike sika committing suicide by standing there at 144 yards. I pulled the smoke pole up on him and when the smoke cleared he was piled up on the road right where he was standing. I haven't shot enough of those delicious critters to be picky yet, I was more that happy to get the chance at him and glad I made a good clean shot. Of course not 20 minutes later I videoed a hind standing over top him taunting him but only 1 sika during that 3 day season so I was happy to get some pictures and video on my phone. Came home that evening and did some hunting around the way with no chances at shots.. I talked to Hunter on Friday night, he had shot a bruiser 8 point that day and we discussed going to a spot to hunt Saturday morning. I have hunted it in the past and had somewhat of an idea of where I wanted to try and we met up early that morning and headed to the property. Got our gear together and off went went in the dark. I set up on the edge of an over grown field I had seen a few deer including a nice buck last year on. Got comfy and waited. About 815-830 I hear a twig snap and I start looking around to catch a glimpse of a deer heading from the woods to the field. Was about 100-120 yards and I was able to turn in my climber and get a good solid rest and just waited for her to clear a few trees. When she did I gave a loud mouth bleat and she stopped with her head tucked behind a tree and I had a great clear look at her body. Lined up the shot and let the smoke fly. She didn't take a step and was down when the smoke cleared. Nice fat doe. Hunter went and got my sled for me in the truck while I field dressed her and we were out of there by 10am. Great hunt and super happy to be having a good year so far. Really wanting to get the kids out more and get them a couple chances. Their time will come and they really enjoy getting out even if we don't see anything. My dad is coming out in a few weeks to hunt and visit for like a month. Really looking forward to that time as it will probably be the last chance I get to hunt with the old man as his health is deteriorating and he is just getting older and slower with time. Should be an EPIC adventure. I have a few pics on my phone I will try and post of the deer so far. Looking forward to more hunts and seeing you all when the chances arise... Good luck this year and be safe out there..
