Started taking my neice to hunter safety last night and after the first night I'm already wondering how I've survived so long. Since when is it wrong to hunt alone? You should always carry a cell phone with you?? Geez, what ever happened to self reliance?! According to the state of Maryland Daniel Boone wouldn't have made it through one day in the freakin woods.

LOL!!! So funny!! I do hunt alone but also enjoy hunting with others. I like taking my cell phone with me as well but don't like texting non-stop. My son is taking the course over here in March! I am super excited!

I teach hunters safety here in MD and every instructor has their own teaching style and sometimes an opinion on different subjects in the course. There is nothing wrong with hunting alone, I often hunt by myself and with friends too. I do recommend hunters bring a cell phone with them when they hunt alone and leave a plan with a family member on where you will be hunting and what time you should be back from your hunt. Of course nothing is more importent than being safe when your hunting and no animal is worth your life.

Hunter or anyone else. What is the youngest age you have seen take a hunter safety course. Or what age would one get started at. I have a 4 and 5 year old and I am think maybe 7 or 8 years of age for them to get started?

The youngest I have seen a child attend one of the courses I have taught is 6 years old but no matter what the childs age it should be the decision of the parent if he or she believes their child is mature enough and capable of passing the test to hunt with adult supevision. Allot of the course is gun/hunter safety but not all of it and the test could be difficult for younger children to crasp. You can always take the online course and test too to see if your child is ready.

My neice is 7 1/2 and seems to be enjoying it so far. A lot of information for a kid, but I told her just to learn what she can, have fun and see how it goes. If she doesn't pass she'll still be better for it and will be able to pass it next time in a year or two.

Was looking around for safety course information today for one of my children and logged in to see you guys have been on this topic today. Perfect!
Brett,
Maybe you can help me out. You are attending one in March? Where is that held and who is the contact? Does anyone know of any classes being held in St. Mary's county or close by? Appreciate any information!
Thanks

I became a certified Hunters Education Teacher over the weekend and look forward to helping out on my first class next month. I put both my kids through the hunters education course at 7 yrs old. They were very receptive and passed the test with little to no problem. JBird you can go online www.dnr.maryland.gov/nrp_classes.aspand it will show you all of the courses offered in MD for the upcoming year and locations. I will be joining HUNTER and the team he supports at the PG county Southern MD Archers locations. Hope to see some of you there. Let me know if you have any questions.

JBird- The course starts on Saturday 23 March at 745am and ends at 6pm then on Sunday- 24 March class is from 8am to about 1pm- usually done early. Cost is $10.00 per person. The course is at Southern Maryland Archery Club, 11000 Old Indian Head Road in Cheltenham, MD. We break for lunch on Saturday from noon to 1pm. Only thing you need to bring is yourself- all guns and paper are supplied.

My son is 7 on March 18th. He has been wanting to take the course and go hunting with me for a long time. I take him hunting but the course is a bonus for him! He can read just above average level for his age and I am EXPECTING him to pass the test. I was told that the educators work with th younger kids to help them pass which is why I signed him up now. He is mature enough to hunt WITH ME. He listens and follows instructions well but is still a 7 yr old kid. I too will be taking the course as I only have a PA hunter's safety and people here in MD give me a hard time about not having a stupid number...... I am receiving information this week to become an instructor so I will be doing that asap as well!

Oh my god, the class just keeps getting better and better. Last night the first thing I learned is that it takes AT LEAST THREE people to put up a portable ladder stand, any less is unsafe and you can't do it. Once again, how have I survived all these years? And then we got to the muzzleloader part. The poor guy doing that section got so many things about muzzleloaders just plain wrong that I quit counting. After the class I invited him up to a club shoot just so he can learn something, it was quite obvious he'd only shot a modern MZ, and a few times at that, and really didn't know what he was talking about. I feel sorry for the folks taking the class who, 10 years from now, will still be saying "but that's what they told us in Hunter Safety class."

FOX has an itch that only another man can scratch.
He's a little shy about it, and afraid to come out of the closet.
I told him he was among friends here, and to not be afraid to let his hair down and let the little frilly gal trapped inside finally come out!
So since he's so reluctant to share his dark secret, I thought I'd make it a point to do it for him.
Good point Fox?

Osprey for once I agree with you and have no problem with admitting many times I am strong willed and hot headed but I do care about the hunting heritage in this country and the serious attack on our 2nd Amendment rights which is nothing more than an attempt to take guns away from everyone to include hunters. I volunteer my time as all the Hunters Education instructors do because we do care, more importantly we do it because if we don't hunting goes away and I for one don't want to see that happen in my lifetime. If anything I hope this hunting season everyone who can will take a kid hunting, introduce an adult friend to hunting and the shooting sports, volunteer their time to organizations that support hunters and our gun rights, contact your elected officials and fight for Constitutional rights and get your family’s involved in what we all love about hunting.
