Had a great couple of hunts to finish the season. This was a bookend season for me. Best two hunts were the first and the last. Going to have to travel somewhere next year. Maryland duck hunting is pretty dismal anymore. Still had a great season. Got some new hunters out and got them their birds and got to get together with some good friends for a few hunts. The only thing that was lacking was the birds.

That is one heck of a finish Bart! Nice mess of ducks for sure. We had a great finish on the ducks as well. Killed 10 ringnecks and 14 redheads between the last few days. Have never killed redheads in the pond in the 26 years my dad has owned the place and was able to get 14 in 2 days. Absolutely made our season one to remember! Thaks to my Dad for running the ice-eater every night and keeping the pond open. It really payed off for the ducks and geese. I will try to get some pics up.
Osprey i remember you talking about a redhead duck recipe.....you mind sharing the recipe so i can give it a try?

Wow Jbird, that is a heck of as way to end the season. Was this the piece in the shore? That is the last place I would expect redheads. Definitely get Ospreys recipe and post some pics.

No Bart....all the ducks were taken on the Western Shore in St. Mary's County. My dad's place is religiously a haven for geese and very few ducks. I believe the lack of open water pushed them inland in searce of some and he had what they were looking for. His place is a few miles inland from any big water. We were and still are shocked!

Very cool on the ringers and reds Jbird! Ringers are more of a freshwater diver, I'd guess the redheads followed them inland to your pond. Over here on the saltwater I've only killed two ringers in my life (other places yes, but not here at home). I can remember seeing loads of ringers on the ponds from Frederick west when I used to go to Frostburg, always thought that was cool. The redhead recipe is have the birds cleaned and plucked whole. Stuff the body cavitywith cut up celery and onion, sprinkle with thyme, pat of butter on top of each, cup or so of dark wine poured over and around the bird. I use homemade blackberry wine, but red wine should work, get something cheap and sweet. Cover tightly and bake at 350 for 3 hours. A roasting bag will work, or wrap in foil or a pan with a tight lid. Use the liquid after cooking, a mix of the wine, fats, and seasonings, as a gravy. I serve over brown or wild rice. My season ended with a wimper as we were iced out the last two days, but the season as a whole was very good here. Got my young dog working ducks like a champ this year, had a great bluewing shoot in September with friends, hunted with plenty of buddies and family, took two young cousins from Colorado on their first hunts ever and got them their first ducks and geese, actually killed some puddlers in my impoundment for a change and was covered up with divers the whole late split. I'd be satisified if every year was this good, much better than last year! Think I've got at least one kid lined up for the youth hunt on the 9th, too, really excited to get out for that day and get Puck a few more retrieves.

Congrats to all on the end of the season.
My season was pretty good here - best I've had in about 3 years. Looking forward to turkey now.

That's a great picture!
The ringnecks are no stranger to his place. He typically gets them after the season lets out in pretty big numbers but the redhead's were quite the surprise.
Thanks for the recipe....I am going to give it a try in the next day or two.
I too am ready for the Turkey's!

Great pics! I got my first legite duck this year! Picked up a property in PG with a huge pond but will be losing it next year. I'll try to post the picture of the two gadwalls I got. I don't have a good set up of decoys or blind but we got two geese and four ducks on the last day! If I had bigfoots or floaters we could have hammered them!! I broke out my turkey calls last night and e-mailed the parents of the two boys I am taking this youth day so I am so very ready! I just wish I had the PG property cause it was an all around great place for deer, turkey and water fowl.

Listen.... I am all about sharing properties Osprey! If I had not started so late with waterfowl "because I always liked to deer hunt and never had a good place to waterfowl hunt" I would have put out the invite. Plus, this property has one other hunter that I gave precidence to however he never got back to me if he was going to hunt at all. With that said..... I am losing the property in two months so no more turkey, deer, or waterfowl. If it was on the west side........ We could hunt till March and I would bring all of ya cause we could easily tag out 15-20 guys! I watched these geese come in flocks of 6-20 about 3-5 minutes apart.... It was sickening!!
