Thought I would post up a few pics from the trip that I have.. Had a great time with a great group of guys.. Hunting could have been better but we hunted hard and everyone got at least one animal..
Started out getting to Casper Wyoming on Oct 12th.. The next day we went and shot our rifles at a really nice range in town and everyone made sure their gear was ready to go..
Then it was off to do a little trout slaying with the crew to kill some time until the 15th opener..
Here is the stringer we had at the end of the day. Everyone got in on the action and we could have stayed longer and limited out but had plenty of 3-4 lbers for the grill that night..
After a long day of shooting and fishing we packed up and headed back into town.. Sunday was spent getting gear ready to go for the next day and just chillin out in greater CASPER Wyoming..
So now it is Monday Oct 15th Opening day for our areas to deer and Antelope hunt. Nalley, my buddy Larry and I went after Mule deer and the other 4 fellas went after Lopes.. The 3 of us found ourselves in a walk in area that seemed like it was straight up hill and never ending to get to where we thought the deer would be. After along hike we hit the ridgelines to glass. Larry headed into some thick cover to do some stalking and Nalley and I headed to the ridge. It wasn't long after splitting up I catch movement to my right and see I have 2 Spike Elk near me.. Being the hunter I am I close the distance to see how close I can get.. These pics were taken within 15 feet or so before they knew I was there...
after a long day Nalley was the only one to find deer. He had a decent little buck bedded down on the ridge below him with a few does but decided to pass.. The rest of the day was spent hiking and SEARCHING for deer to no avail..
I was able to see a herd of elk on the other ridge (about 50 or so) and a couple of nice bulls sparring.. Very cool to see through the binoes..
I happened to walk up on a couple Indians after what appeared to be a long session of passing the peace pipe around and before I was scalpped I snap a quick photo...
Tuesday found us in the same area and after hiking and glassing the deer were just not there in the numbers (or BUCKS) like we had hoped.. Lots of hiking and glassing and only elk to be seen.. Long day in the 40 - 50 mile an hour wind..
Heading out we did see a group of turkeys that could not have cared less we were there taking pictures..
Wednesday we decided to change the area we were hunting and headed out.. We got into a new spot and started working the glass.. I looked over and on a ridge line I see two deer. Throw the binoes up and we have a couple bucks feeding in the sage brush.. We park the rental and head up the hill to close the distance.. After looking them over a minute it is decided that I am going to try and take one of the bucks and my buddy Mike (who shot a B&C Lope on Monday and is now deer hunting with us) will try and get the other deer. We set up and Nalley gets a range on the left deer for me. Over 400 yards away. Confident in my shooting I lay down and post my Savage 300 Win Mag up on a rock. I take aim and confirm with Mikey that he is ready to shoot the buck on the right. He gives me the green light and I cut loose a Hornady 180 grain missle.. Forgetting I am in Wyoming I forget my windage the the bullet strikes dirt 3 feet behind my animal. Nalley calls out 3 FEET BEHIND HIM and the deer is on the run. I chamber another round and pull out in front of the animal now at every bit of 450 yards. I let it fly and I hear Nalley STILL BEHIND HIM. I load up another and get out in front of the deer at least 4 feet as he is running left to right on the hill side and squeeze the trigger.. BOOM he buckles.. I know I got him and the deer gathers himself enough to make a dash for it straight down hill (Towards the waiting rental car ) I follow him in the scope and see him bed down about 250 yards from our position. I stick a couple more rounds in the rifle and make may way to the deer. As I crest the hill I see antler peeking out of the sage brush and the deer sees me. As he got to get up I anchor him with a final shot. Not my best Mule deer but I was more than happy to have a chance at him...
We get him cleaned up and into the back of the Tahoe and off to find more..
A long day of glassing and not much luck we start heading out.. We have under an hour or so of shooting light left and as we are heading down the dirt road I catch a glimpse of white off to me left.. I slam on the brakes and hit the spot with the glasses.. Mule Deer on his feet and thinking he is hid.. We pull off the dirt road and behind the rock formation where the buck is "hiding".. Nalley and I make our way up along the rock formation and I peek over to see a NICE buck standing there.. I tell Nalley this is the one and SHOOT HIM.. Nalley can't see him and I am freaking out.. HE IS RIGHT THERE NALLEY.. I peek over and the buck has got spooked and is on the move.. I tell Nalley he is running GET HIM... Nalley jumps out from behind the rick and takes aim.. I am losing my mind as I watch this great buck heading for the hill country... As Nalley's 270 cracks off I see the bullet hit its mark and the buck is down.. We high 5 a couple times and Nalley has shot this great beast on the run at 150 yards.. We get the other guys and the truck and head over to collect his animal. In all the congrats and high 5ing we of course forget to bust out the camera as it is getting late and feild dress the beast and load him up.. We get a few pictures back at my buddies house and the Celebration continues..
That night I had told my buddy Micah, who is on a meat hunt, that I would help him locate and get his Antelope Doe.. We head out the the area and it doesn't take long before we are on Antelope.. After several oppurtunities and a few misses Micah is a bit down.. We continue to look and head into a river basin where one of the other fellas was able to fill his goat tag the previous day and had confirmed SEVERAL herds of goats had passed through there.. we set up and get ready and I see 2 doe goats heading our way.. I told Micah to get ready and we wait.. the goat is heading right for us.. I am shaking with antipation and my breathing quickens.. I tell Micah to just wait the goat has no idea the grim reaper is waiting for her.. The goat closes the distance and is broadside at less that 50 yards.. She stops and I am just ready to fall over with excitement as I just knew the crack of the 7mm was about to sound off. I am whispering Micah SHOOT MICAH SHOOT WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR and I hear the last thing I expected.. "I can't see her... there is brush in the way" I died a little just then as the goat gets spooky and as they do was gone in an instant... As I watch her hind parts disappear I look over and her comes the other one. I quickly gather myself and tell him to get ready as this one is heading down the same trail.. He readies and we watch the goat come skipping by without ever breaking stride and is gone in a flash.. NOOOOOOOOOOOO
Well we are not giving up and we get back with Jerry in the truck to continue.. A few more failed attemps and Micah is really down.. He has one round left for the 7mm and is ready to cash it in for the day.. As we head out to the highway Jerry will have no part of this BS and simply tells Micah : you have one round and a chance, we are going back in" Micah agrees even if it is half hearted... We turn the truck around and back down the dirt road we go.. After several attempts and missed chances it seemed you could not get within 500 yards of a antelope in the truck without it turning into a dusty trail and disappearing but we are unwavering.. We head down the dirt road and less than 2 miles in we spot 5 goats on the left side of the road 75 yards away like they grew out of the ground.. I mean we just passed this area less than 10 minutes ago and they were not there... We glass the the semi herd and confirm the goat on the left end is a GOOD doe.. Micah and his ONE bullet exits the truck.. As me and jerry wait.. Micah heads off the dirt road and unfazed the goats are at 60 yards and could not care less of the giant orange monster in the sage.. Micah takes aim and me and Jerry are steadily losing it in the truck as we watch fromt he trucks behind out binoes.... SHOOT MICAH SHOOT MICAH COME ON AND SHOOT.. the crack of the 7mm sounds and like a light from heaven a cloud of hair and dust forms and down goes the doe.. Me and Jerry are out of the truck as fast as a disappearing speed goat and down to Micah for high 5's and celebration.. As Jerry said.. You have a bullet you have a chance. Punch that tag........
It was a long week with many ups and downs but a great trip with some good folks... Really had a wonderful trip and wish I could go back every year.
Then of course att he airport this fine fellow and his 30 does stand next to the road to wish you FAREWELL....
