I'm starting to hate opening the paper and turning on the computer, seems DNR finds a new way to put it to us every day. Gonna charge us more for licenses, so they have money to do bear studies, but then we'll have less chance at getting a tag. Just wonderful. Change could boost bear hunt permits in 2 Md. counties Sunday - 3/4/2012, 2:11pm ET CUMBERLAND, Md. - Maryland wildlife officials say a new formula for allocating bear hunting permits could mean about half of the permits will be awarded to Allegany and Garrett counties, the counties where hunting is allowed. The Cumberland Times-News ( bit.ly/wsoBmo) reports that the Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Service will award the first 25 percent of permits to applicants from the bear hunt zone. Those who aren't selected will compete in a drawing for the remaining 75 percent. Residents of Allegany and Garrett counties draw an average of 35 percent of the permits, but service Director Paul Peditto says the new formula will boost that percentage. With more local hunters with better access to private lands where nuisance bears tend to live, Peditto expects hunting to become a more efficient bear management tool.

I saw this on one of the other sites.. Freaking crazy how they change this stuff and expect people that pay for licenses to just keep eating it up.. Getting to a point where it is not cost effective anymore.. All land is being taken up by people with money to pay ridiculous amounts for leases and such. The days of going up and knocking on doors to get permission are going away.. Land is now big business. Yet they keep increasing our fees and expect hard working people that are just barely getting by to keep paying these prices.. Gas is almost 4$ a gallon and I have a pretty reasonably priced lease on the eastern shore but it still cost me 50$ just to drive over there, not including all the money that goes into the equipment and the hunt itself.. Hunting is supposed to be passed on to the younger generations but it is getting dang close to being too expensive anymore... UNREAL

This is unreal and hunters in MD once again are taking it in the A$$. I wish I was on that lease Big Fox, lol at least you can afford the one you got. Been n trying to find somewheres to hunt sika on the eastern shore and no luck (way way to expensive for my budget).

You've already gotten your bear Osprey... ;D I'm still waiting to draw my tag.
A bear is a bear, isn't it? There seems to be no problem hitting the quota every year as is.

I did get one, but it was on Art's tag as a copermittee. He and I have one tag in 8 years between us, 1 for 16 chances. If the odds get any worse I'll save my $15 application fee until I have the money for a trip to WV, PA or Canada.
But hey, now it sets a precedent for locals. Now we can push for county residents ONLY to get the first 25% of blind sites, county residents ONLY to be the first 25% on public sika lands, etc, etc.

Ahh the glorious democratic people's republic of o'malleyland.....shafting you any way we can since the 1600's! ;-) this type of stuff is happening across the board. Just pick up the last couple of issues of field and stream and read about what's going on in federal congress. Any time the economy gets crappy, wildlife conservation, environment, etc all things that benefit hunters and outdoorsmen gets it's budget cut. It's a younger congress and more urban sprawl in this area which means younger kids aren't hunting anymore or don't have opportunities. So they don't really care or see the impact their choice has on the outdoors. They think developing that land will bring in more jobs. Even though study after study shows more jobs and revenue is generated from outdoor activities and conservation. Anyhow off my soapbox, but this crap pisses me off. They expect to charge more money to a smaller group to cover gaps in budget rather than sound fiscal practices. I already wrote my elected officials.

Update on the bear fiasco. The application period began last week, but I couldn't find any mention of the 25% stuff on the DNR site or the application so I did some checking. First the bear biologist told me it was on the site, I just couldn't find it. Then when I asked for a link I finally got oh, IT must have screwed it up, it isn't on there. On Friday, after a week of sales, they finally mentioned the change, but only on the lottery explanation page. Last time I checked the actual application page it still says everything is the same as it's been since 2007. Today I even got the auto e-mail about the applications and it, too, said everything is the same since 2007, with no mention of losing the first 25% to locals in the bear zone. And this is with them making the change back in April, so it's not like they've been too rushed to publicize it.
I don't know about you guys, but I think to be taking sportsmen's money without letting them know is borderline criminal.

Saw it yesterday, and meant to say "ATTABOY!" So, ATTABOY Dave! Glad to see someone is holding their feet to the fire, and appreciate you using the Bully Pulpit to call 'em out when they need it. I've been pretty happy with DNR last few years, overall, but a few of these schemes make me go "HUH???" I usually say something nice BEFORE I lay into 'em. I would not have applied again, simply over this issue, but the kids have accumulated points and really want to go. Guy I used to work with runs hounds in WVa, so I may well call him and spend my dollars THERE instead!

Thanks Dave! Yeah, all of us at work have been talking about it, we hate to lose 4-5 years of points we've built up. All decided we'll keep on until we draw, then that'll be it. PA and WV just make it so much easier and you can plan ahead.

I put in for my son and myself. It would not allow me to out in an application for my younger son even though he is a hunter's safety graduate, but when I tried to do it it had an error stating his birthdate did not fall in the requirements.. Again no mention of this requirement on the site either that I could find.. So I will also keep giving my 15$ for me and the kid and another 15$ starting next year for my son Austin until one of us draw.. But if the miracle of all miracles happens and we both draw this year I will be accepting applications from members to escort us to the bear grounds and help with harvesting the bears

Where we went last time was a hookup from another guy, and that was a once only deal, but I know some great public land areas up there Andy that were always full of bears if you want some company. Would be awesome if a few of us drew the same year and we could do a group camp for the week!
