I would like to plant some stuff in the spring for deer, turkey, and woodducks. Any suggestions? No fields to plant in. Going to be in the woods, but some areas are fairly open in the woods. Also have a small, somewhat marshy area with a stream running through it that holds woodducks. Looking mostly for tree/shrub suggestions.

A feeder with corn and goat feed works well...

Sounds like a rough spot, but for trees I'd look at "Gobbler" variety Sawtooth Oaks. Small acorns for deer and turkey, produce first nuts within 5 years. I've got the regular sawtooths started here and alrady getting some acorns this year.

Why the gobbler variety and not the regular? And what do you mean by rough? ;D

Well, a marsh and a wooded area really limit options, that's why I say rough.
The gobbler has smaller acorns that the turkeys can eat easier and you said you wanted it for turkeys and woodies, too.

Thanks. Had already ordered 25 regular sawtooth, so the gobbler variety will probably have to wait till next year. Are the acorns on the regular variety that big?? Good thing for deer if they are I guess.

The nut is at least as big around as a nickle on the regular variety. Deer do love 'em though!!

Belive that the soil where they will be going is quite fertile - I'm hoping for golf ball sized acorns.

We've fertilized patches of oaks with decent results.
Usually hit 5 or 6 trees, close together, on an oak flat. 10-10-10 along circumference of drip edge. Had a narrow, HEAVY spade- drop a cup or two of fert in each hole, and stomp down. Take a few steps, repeat.

Trees came in the UPS truck yesterday. Looked to be in great shape. The trees were double the size that they said they would be. Closer to 3-4 feet than 12-24 inches. Hopefully not too much extra work to plant them. Guess I know what I will be doing part of this weekend.

Did you get them all in?
Where did you get them from? I've always gotten mine through the NWTF, but the last batch I got was small, looked weak and haven't grown as well as the others.

Got them all in. ;D
Trees came from the MD tree nursery. All looked to be in pretty good shape, though a little taller than advertised... Good and bad I guess. Maybe they will bear sooner, but it meant more digging for me to get the trees planted cause of the bigger root system.
Think I'll have a better idea of how the quality was this fall once I see how they do between now & then, but as of now I'd say good.
On the gobbler sawtooths, I will grab some of those next year & put them closer to the water where the woodies are. Got the regular variety planted this year for the deer I guess.

I'll have to try them next year, that state nursery is just up by Federalsburg. My sawtooths are flowering already, so it's probably late for me to get bare root stock now for this year. Good luck with them, let us know how they do!
Did you get treet tubes or cages for them? First batch I planted used 4' tree tubes and they did great. Seond batch I tried to save $ and used 3' tubes, deer hammered them as soon as they grew out of the tubes, had to go back and cage them all.

No tubes - I'm sure that there will be some casualties.

My persimmon trees are coming up pretty good. My folks had their 3 persimmon trees fall over in the storms last year. So I gathered up some seeds/fruit and potted them till saplings. Moved them back near my food plots and they are doing pretty good. I'm going to have to put some tubes or netting around them though...I can see them disappearing when they get bigger.
