I am curious to know why the state is divided so much on the issue of Sunday hunting? I lobbied with local hunting clubs in the late 90's in New York to pass Sunday hunting. Once the issue finally hit the plate in Albany, it took three years for state to allow Sunday hunting. When they did however, it was state wide, not county by county. I live and hunt in Wicomico County, which does not allow Sunday hunting. I could be wrong, but it doesn't seem to be a management tool more as it does an ethical issue. Does anybody know the story, and if so, who can I start writing to get the laws changed.(My license costs the same but I get to hunt less?) Also, what are some of your opinions? I know some believe that the animals need a day to rest or others believe Sunday hunting does not rest well with the Church?

I believe that the issue here in MD is with the church, but I am not sure of that.

Even though I would love for there to be Sunday hunting I think my wife would KILL ME. Work all week then I would be in the woods ALL weekend! I think its good to have some time without hunters in the woods to do some scouting and hang stands.

it is ridiculous to not be able to hunt sundays. They keep jacking up the price of our license to off set the falling trend in people hunting. well people have to stop hunting because the only chance they have to hunt is the weekend. most people work or have to commute to work in prime time hunting during the week, alot of people have to work two jobs. the only time they have is weekends, and they are not going to continue to pay the outrageous prices for the hunting license that they keep increasing to hunt a couple of days a year on saturday. it is freakign crazy. i am all for sunday hunting, i don't care about what the church says, what about they peopl ethat believe in what they beieve but do not attend church. if you go to church more power to you. i myslef do not and i just hope you are praying for others to be able to hunt on sundays....

If it does have something to do with the Church! Then to me that is BS. How about "Separation of Church and State"!
In my opinion there is no reason why the state should not allow Sunday Hunting! I personally think eventually Maryland will allow Sunday hunting in the future, at least it looked that with Ehrlich in office.

Totally no reason why we shouldn't be able to hunt on Sunday. I can go to a bar, a football game, go fishing, but I can't hunt on Sunday. Unbelieveable. I really haven't seen one good argument as to why either. Hunters need to join together on this one. If you personally don't want to hunt on Sunday (religious reasons, etc...) fine, but don't stand in the way of the rest of us who would like to have more opportunities to do what we love. It would make it easier in terms of recruiting younger hunters to the sport. Think how many fathers can't take their kids hunting b/c soccer games etc..., but if they had that extra day it would open up a lot more opportunities. Opportunity that is what it is all about. Sunday hunting is legal in 43 other states and works fine there, so why not MD?

Wow it seem to me that most hunters feel very strongly about Sunday Hunting. Maybe we should all join forces to put something together to present to the state. Lets do some research and continue this thread with information we find. Lets get Buckwild on Sunday hunting!!!

Me personally ,I say lets hunt! if they want a day of rest then make it a weekday. it would definitely help cut down the deer population, that alot people (non hunters) complain about.Iwonder if there were any restictions on the settlers that stepped foot on these lands years ago. As far as the church goes most churches have masses on saturday as well as sunday and if that were the real issue ,say maybe no hunting until after 12pm on sundays at least that would give us the evening hunt.

Sunday hunt?? I'm all for it to. Like Andy has said, most hunters only get to hunt weekends. And the wifes would get mad! Also there are the Churches? It goes something like this, the settlers started it. So if you look in the books most of the States that don't do Sunday hunting are from the origanl colony's. Sunday was for pray (dam pilgrams). But as you all know the state is trying to do Sunday hunting (2 days), We should get toghter and ask DNR they are for it. But are problem is NON HUNTERS thay have tried to stop the bear hunt every time. Hunting is the way to contorl aniamls not birth control. My 2 Cents

Now don't quote me on this, but I remember hearing years ago from an older hunting buddy that the reason we cannot enjoy Sunday hunting is due to Church. Specifically, he mentioned a "Blue Law." I am not quite sure what a blue law is or was, but the way I understand it is that many many years ago, the country created these laws to regulate hunting, sale of booze etc. Perhaps if I have time I will do a google search.
Anyway, I agree that we should be allowed to hunt on Sundays. I would bet that the vast majority of us responding to this topic have full-time jobs, which require us to work monday through friday. Therefore, why the hell not? Being that us hunters in region B are allowed to harvest upwards of 36 deer per year, it is evident that there is an overabundance of deer. I feel dumbfounded sometimes at the regulations that the State of Maryland creates or adheres to.
Just my two cents anyway!

Think you may be right about that BLUE LAW thing.........
Blue law
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article is about laws created to enforce certain views of moral standards. For early Colony of Connecticut laws, see Blue laws.
A blue law, in the United States and Canada, is a type of law designed to enforce moral standards, particularly the observance of the Sabbath. Most have been repealed or are simply unenforced, although prohibitions on the sale of alcoholic beverages, and occasionally almost all commerce, on Sundays are still enforced in some areas. [1] Blue laws often prohibit an activity only during certain hours and there are usually exceptions to the prohibition of commerce, like grocery and drug stores. Places that still have and enforce blue laws often have strong religious fundamentalism,[citation needed] but some have been retained as a matter of tradition or out of convenience.
