Just wondering if anyone has ever caught a stingray in the Potomac. I know probably every body that has ever dropped a line in the Potomac has hung or caught a skate (cownose ray) but how about a stingray? In all the years I have been fishing I have never caught one. While croaker fishing this past weekend I caught four of them. I took this pic with my phone so I could verify the exact identity of this ray.

Rare I think for these waters.Have never caught a stingray,But many of skates. We use to snag them with big trebble hooks.I caught one with a beettle spin and light tackle once. Was over a hour and a half fight from shore. Also had a buddy spend a night in the hospital because of skate fishing.BEWARE of the barb . Jbird use to know a guy who went by that same name. You ever work at Swan Point in the early 90's ?

I caught a few cow nose with The Deer Hunter, and when I say caught, I mean with my fish arrow kit and a compound bow

I was just curious. I didn't know how rare of a catch it actually was. Since I originally posted I have talked with some people who have actually caught them at some point or another.
BTW...all 4 rays were caught in Piney Point and just as the others have stated the croaker are certainly biting good right now. We caught a few that were just under 3 pounds.
