Been working on a gun for a buddy, my first gun for someone else. He wanted something shorter than what I've built so far, smaller cal for targets and squirrels, and other than a request for a MD flag on it left me with freedom to do/try whatever else I wanted. Building him a .40 early Lancaster style, 36" straight octagon barrel, chambers lock, carving and engraving. Got most of the hard work done, just a bit of sanding left on the wood, then stain and finish that. Also got to draw file the barrel, cut dovetails and install the sights, then brown the barrel and lock. Should have it done in a few weeks. He'll probaby have it before the end of squirrel season! Heres a few teaser pics...

Looks great Dave. Is this for Art? When does your commercial production start? I'm sure this could be a good tax write-off.

Yeah, other than one teaser pic he hasn't even seen it yet! Heck, as a writer I've already got plenty of tax write-offs. But I'll probably do some for sale soon. Not sure if I'd take orders or just build what I want and then sell it - less pressure that way. I've also started on my next one, a .54 with a 44' barrel. Hoping to draw a bear tag next year and take one with that. D

Looks nice Dave! (see? no smart-ass comments about scopes,Tru-glo sights, or anything of that ilk:I'm reformed! ;D)
And speaking of writing, I really liked your description of a "snow goose tornado" the other day in your article. Pretty much painted a spot-on picture!

That's scary. Both that you found a copy of my article - and that you can read! And you can now thank me for making up for your lack of smart ass comments. Took a cool pic yesterday, top to bottom my first, a MD style, the silver Lehigh, this gun and lastly, roughed out to shape, my next build, a .54 cal, 44" barrel Beck style.

I kin red raht goodly! Had a couple tautog wrapped in the paper, THAT'S how I saw your piece! All their innards had popped out their bungholieOs from coming up from 90 feet! Rather fitting!
And I'm more surprised that they let you use anything sharper than a crayon, there at the home!
(Oh well, short lived reformation!)

Does anyone know if it is legal to hunt deer with buckshot out of a muzzleloader (In dorchester co.)?
From my interpretation of the hunting guide, it wasn't....was hoping someone else had another interpretation of it.

What time shoud I be there? ;D ;D ;D Frank, I think you might have to fight Art for it!!! On the buckshot, well, regs say muzzleloaders have to fire single projectile. But a smoothbore is also a shotgun, and regs say in Dorchester shotguns can use buckshot for deer, sooooo - grey area?!?! I don't think they thought about the few dozen guys with muzzleloading shotguns when they wrote the regs.

Yea, but the fight would be worth it...Nice gun.
I thought it was sort of a gray area as well....That would be half of my incentive in building a ML shotgun.

Very nice, how good a friend does one have to be to get one? I guess you and Art spend enough time in the marsh for that..

I don't think they thought about the few dozen guys with muzzleloading shotguns when they wrote the regs. Ah, the ML shotgun/buckshot question again! ;D Don't just ask an officer, go up teh food chain and get it in writing IF you can. Many officers are woefully ill informed about THE LAW. I'll ask 3 or 4 them same question and get 3 or 4 different answers. And one older officer always tells sometimes the regs say one thing, but COMAR says abother, and you WILL win in court, IF you're fool enough to push it. (I AM, but this has NOTHING to do with ML/buckshot!) YEARS ago, when you couldn't scope a ML rifle during ML season, I asked a bunch about using a scoped ML during shotgun seasom, and you wouldn't believe some of the replies I got! (I hunted with it anyway) For grins try asking about the Savage smokeless ML and teh minimum powder requiremnet for MLs used for deer (which is above the safe max load for the Savage!) ;D Dave, looks good. Doubt I'd have gone with the MD flag, but that's just me. REALLY like the turtle detail! Well executed!
