I think the road kill thread touched on a interesting topic. How does everyone feel about taking a rack off a dead deer? I have done it several times, weather for decorations or rattling or showing to others or because I look at them as gold. One thing that really pisses people off (me included) is to see a headless deer on the side of the road. Even if was already dead, headless deer look as though they died a savage, brutal death. What do you guys think?

I don't have a problem cutting a rack off, but don't think cutting the head off is a good idea. Even I wouldn't want to see a headless deer on the side of the road, it isn't something I would want my youngest kid to see. If you want the mount, take the whole damn deer, else just get the rack and leave the head.
I also look at antlers like gold, I think it would be a waste to let a good rack be buried when the state comes by to clean up the mess. I would also bet the guys that clean up the roadkill would probably take the rack anyway!

It's nice to find a good set of antlers on the side of the road. I am sure many of us have had the opportunity to take a nice set off road kill. One good thing to do is after removing the antlers to move the deer off the road so it's out of peoples sight. So little Sue doesn't have to see a deer with its brain sticking out.

I agree with every body in this issuse the ones that get me are and I know one of these are the one's who would mount it and say they killed it because I saw his deer on the road and went back to get his rack and he was headless and two days later I was showen the head but I said nothing and kind of don't talk to that one any more. miss guided fool

i dont think cutting off the rack is a big deal but cuttin the head off to mount it like you were the one who killed it is pretty crappy

If it is a NICE deer, then mounting it wouldn't be bad, just be honest about how you got it. I know some people who only want their animals in their house, but it is alway nice to look at a nice deer no matter where it came from.

It was a mix of free-hand and a pattern. The one on the pattern wasn't near big enough, so I had to improvise. Just about time to get creative with another pumpkin.

dont know much about the md laws and regulations regarding road killed deer but here in ohio it is unlawful to either cut the rack off a deer or the head without fully disposing of the body... by this i mean in order for you to actually be legal in taking the rack, you have to also take the deer and get rid of it too... my dad and i are on a road kill list here in ohio and we receive up to 30 deer a year (we live off venison ;D) and ill scan some pics in tonight and post them tomorrow of some bucks weve picked up.

Do you know that the world record buck was a pick up Buck? A clean up crew found it in MI or MO scored 333 7/8. I mean come on why do you want a dead animals rack? And how hard is it to drag the dam thing 20 yards more out of site. Just found 6 rack less buck at the Don caster demonstration Forest on rt 6. Did ever take a piece of meat off of them. But still gutted. Hell shot them gut them wack the rack and leave it. O I'm sorry that would ruin there hunting spot/ slaughter spot. Should charge them with murder in my book or cruelty of animals
my 2 cents today

I agree. Why would you bother gutting the deer if you were only going to saw off it's anlters? Why would you harvest a deer and only saw off it's antlers? If that is all you want, you can buy the damn things on ebay.

plus with the liberal tag limits and you can donate the dang things to feed the needy. it is freaking crazy that someone would do that. i better never find out someone i know would do that or there will be heck to pay. it is one thing to take a road kill's antlers but to purposely go out and shoot a deer and then just cut the horns off is aweful.....

I am not trying to start a fight, but what is the real difference between shooting a deer and taking the rack and trapping a fox for it's pelt? The only real difference is the size of the animal.
I don't agree with shooting deer JUST for their racks (and don't mind trapping for fur). Just out of curiosity, what do some of you guys think the difference between trapping for fur and shooting a deer for antlers is.
