The skate have showed up big time and I mean big time... I work in Piney Point right on the Potomac and clouds of em have been here for the last 5 days. U can get one with every shot u take, its just so many of em schooled up together. Also my buddy lives on the Patuxent near Solomons and has been seeing them for the last week over there, just not as heavy as they are here right now.

Jbird is there any place you can shoot them without a boat? Also where is the place to go for carp in St. Marys?

I have private Property that I can fish on anytime I want down there. It is at the old bulk head beside merryland campground. Can you catch them things? If so with what bait??

Yes - they are quite easy to catch. They will bite pretty much anything, but I have found that I catch the most on cut bait of some sort. Be ready cause they pull like mules.

What does a skate look like? Do they look like a sting ray?

they are stingrays. cownose rays to be exact.
This came off the DNR site: "Anyone who has been near the bay in the past week knows the cownose rays or locally known as skates are here in earnest. Anglers greet their appearance with a variety of perspectives ranging from a welcome to disapproval. They like to eat soft clams, razor clams and soft crabs (who doesn’t) and churn up the bottom in doing so. They can turn a bottom fishing scene on a boat into pure bedlam, especially when the angler wants to haul this flapping behemoth to the boat and the captain and or crew wants nothing to do with it. They can be a lot of fun to anyone interested in a good tussle, if you have something around a 20lb. test outfit on your end of the fight. They also can be particularly fun when hooked from shore in the shallows on a 9wt. fly rod. I got into two of them the other evening from shore and I spent about 20-30-minutes a piece getting them in with two barking German Short-hairs and water splashing everywhere. I have been tempted on several occasions to try and eat one, but so far have passed. There is a way of filleting the meat from what can be best described as the shoulders and my bow-fishing friends tell me it makes a fine barbecue. For now I believe I’ll choose to just let them go. "

LOL, I usually try to AVOID them when fishing! And when I FINALLY got one in the boat, I instantly realized I didn't want it in the boat no more!
Ate some someone else cooked years ago, but WILL try some myself this year. BBQ'd or maybe Italian dressing and on the grill.

I,ve caught them off of Town creek pier , next to solomons bridge many of times. Far as eaten them , we use to take a hole punch to the wings , like scallops and dip in a flour batter , then deep fry! They don,t taste too bad.

Hey guys sorry I have not responded back.......been real busy...
Hardcore if u sweet talk your father in law, he can put you right on em without a boat being necessary. As far as the carp I have'nt had time to really check into em, Forest Landing boat ramp in Hollywood has always been good for carp. When u pull up to the ramp look to your right, there is a cove there covered in grass, the carp have been there for as long as I can remember, but there is grass in most of the creeks in the county right now and thats usually all u need to pile some carp in those little shallow coves. Just check the grass beds I guarantee u will see a carp or two.
Bowhntrtom there infested all around the fuel dock. I work there and can keep pretty close tabs on em. And best of all there is more there now than it was when I originally posted this thread. I can't pattern them though, some days they are there all day long and some days there hit or miss...but one thing is for sure..if you hit em right they will wear you out, its that many. We started making harpoons so we can stick em and pull em straight up without using a gaff and the hassle of a bowfishing rig. Don't get me wrong I love bowfishing and I have 2 fully rigged setups but that harpoon is the real deal!! Makes quick and easy work of those bloody, slimey freaks of nature. The pier kinda acts as a funnel, they swim parallel to it and all u have to do is get in there path. Seems to me the calmer, sunny humid days is when they are the most active, thats the only pattern I can really see.
And yeah everytime they get heavy around the dock our fishing goes right to sh@#...thats not a myth its nothin but the truth. Also for you fisherman were catching hardhead there right now some of which are 20" plus. Squid is def working the best.
