Missouri Deer Collision Bill Will Cost Sportsmen
April 7, 2008 (Missouri)
A bill recently introduced in the Missouri House of Representatives will end up costing the sportsmen of the state and could set a negative precedent on who is responsible for any kinds of damage caused by wildlife.
House Bill 2498 requires the Missouri Department of Conservation to pay to the owner of a motor vehicle the first $250 of any damage caused to a vehicle that collides with a deer.
Outdoorsmen must rally against the bill, as wildlife is the responsibility of all people of the state. Money to cover the damages of deer/vehicle collisions should not be taken from the funds provided to the Missouri Department of Conservation by the licensing fees of sportsmen. Those fees must continue to be used for scientific conservation of the wildlife of the state.
As written, HB 2498 states that vehicle owners must provide “clear and convincing evidence” that the damage was caused by a collision with a deer and that the owner was legally operating the vehicle at the time of the accident. The provisions of the bill say there must have been contact with a deer and do not cover damaged caused to a vehicle due to avoiding a deer.
The bill was introduced on Friday, March 28 by Representative John Quinn (R-Chillicothe) and was co-sponsored by Representatives David Pearce (R-Warrensburg), Therese Sander (R-Moberly), Steve Hunter (R-Joplin) and Brian Munzlinger (R-Williamstown).

I think they should charge the driver for killing a deer out of season.

could they charge the deer with failure to yield to the right of way, or maybe it was a suicidal deer.

Missouri DNR/F&G got 1/8 of 1 cent of sales tax as dedicated funding source years ago, and as far as states go, they are flush!
Seems the money-grubbing SOBs smell a dollar!

hell, we can't get money out of the government now, what makes them think they will be cutting checks everyday.
So any drunk that runs off the road can get a couple of strands of deer hair throw it on the car, say he didn't kill the deer and get $250.00

Thats a crock of shit. Thats like asking every non smoker to pay a littering fine for every butt found on the ground from a smoker. Who the hell has the right to take money allocated for a purpose and redirect it for something totaly off the wall like this. You hit a deer deel with it the rest of us do. Hell donate it and you should get a tax break for donating meat to the hungry and homeless. wheres uncle Ted when you need him

Pastor Busco..... if a deer commits suicide by throwing itself in front of a car, will it go to heaven? I want there to be deer in heaven!! Would it not be murder? The bucks basically throw the doe out in front of the car!! Just because it wouldn't have sex.... hmmmm.

Guys I think everyone is failing to see the silver lining in this law. You can get paid to hunt with your car. Think about it, you can drive around in a beater car looking for deer to run over. Not just on the roads, but heck, drive in the fields as well. I think on a good night you could hit 4 deer or so. Thats a $1000 payday and a freezer full of tasty venison!!! I think I could retire off this program! ;D
