Pretty wild to lay on top one of those bleating black buggers! There is SO much wrong with that sentence......

I went a few times with Dave last Feb and yes it was very interesting. We had to stay out real late on one to bring her core temp back before leaving her.
I do deer, waterfowl , turkey, crabs, custom bases anything maryland related. I want to master home brewed species before moving on.
Osprey -there absolutely is a correct sika form to use and is MD species specific. I finaly found out who was telling my customers this. I have had a few weird looks, then I open the catalog and show them ,Maryland sika deer right there. There are several forms to choose from, most all need altering if your using another species but there is never only one way to do things and you dont have to run from your taxidermist if he tells you there is the correct form. Matter of fact they are looking to expand the pose selection into full sneaks and bugling positions.
Sorry man had to make that clear, you can get hand cuffed and loose business in a hurry with misleading statements. Now just my opinion here I think you can tell a huge differenace, something just looks alittle off when using anything else.
I will have to check with Mods before talking anymore about my business stuff...
But hey I spent a few hours reading back over previous threads and there is plenty I can share and learn from here.

flesher for birds? I was looking at getting 1 yesterday, but they are kinda expensive. I found the motors (1/3rd hp - 1725 rpm) on ebay for about 60-70 bucks, and I can make the stand\frame no problem.
Ive been bugging Jason a lot with taxi questions since my newest goal is to learn bird taxidermy.
ps. nice to know there are some sika forms now, for when i kill 1! good luck

hardcore, Jason does all types of mounts. You can look up his website at www.oakcreektaxidermy.com Take a gander there and see that his work is already good and is improving with each mount he does!

I was helped at one point. As far as bird flesher expensive yes, well worth it for your final result tho. Get a bunch of seadux (tougher skinned) to practise on. Those woodies and teal will give you a fit. Bart sorry for your thread going everywhere bud!

I heard they came out with a MD form recently, or were supposed to, but still haven't seen one that looks just right. Seen lots of poor sika mounts, some good, some very good, and I'm not saying this to put you or anybody else down, but Punky is the only one I've seen do a sika that looks just like the sikas I'm seeing and hunting and photographing in the wild. Poses aren't a problem either, I've seen plenty of bugling and different head turn and position mounts come out of his shop, every one has been and still is on a modified form.
Also, and again not to put anybody down, but only time will tell me anything. There have been plenty of taxidermists start up only to be gone in a few seasons, I want somebody who's been around a while and I can trust to be there next season. Case in point, a couple years ago a young guy opened a shop in Cambridge out at Snows Turn, was gonna set the world afire with his taxidermy work. Didn't take long before the doors were shut and he'd been run out of business. I know a few hunters that tried him and the mounts fell apart in a year, saw a steady stream of them at Punky's shop begging him to find capes to re-do or fix that kid's work. I've been running over a grand of taxidermy work a year for the past six years, I'll stick with the guy already doing it right instead of exploring for somebody learning to do it right.

I don't think you ever stop learning about animals, especially sika. My buddy has been mounting them for 30 years and is still learning and changing little things on his mounts. He's taught me a lot about what to look for. Not sure where you are coming from, you say your guy does things right but is still learning. Further explaining you will stick with someone who is already doing things right opposed to someone "learning to do it right"...bit confusing. I for one am not exploring to do things right on customer mounts I want to make that perfectly clear.I am fairly new with 5 years in now and no different from your guy with 30 its up to us to get better as a whole. Bad taxidermy from anyone tattoos the industry. Do you question Punky when he makes changes? So whats the issue with anyone else learning and adjusting vs your guy.....he is your guy, thats just it. I agree with all your concepts on fallin shops and dependability. I am not here to confront anybody ever but when you preach only one way to do something and all else is wrong to thousands of local people on the internet, I wont agree with that. Potentially hurting good people trying to earn a decent living. Satisfaction of product in any business can lead to its demise. Continuing to advance and learn weather you've got 5 years in or 30 years in is always going to benefit a your career. Sounds as if we reside in the same general area and have the same interests at heart maybe this would be better discussed over a beer. Good luck this hunting season.

Didn't take long before the doors were shut and he'd been run out of business. I know a few hunters that tried him and the mounts fell apart in a year. I had the opportunity to lease that store front for my shop and declined after thinking of all the bad comments on his work that could negatively impact my product. Must have been some bad stuff. I had one customer say he looked in the window and seen his bird and just walked away. At some point you have to figure your in an area with knowledgeable hunters who know better.....

Jason, please don't think I've been raggin on ya or singling you out, not how I intended it at all. Just learned lots of little things to look for on them and I'm pretty honest about what I want. Normally would've just kept quiet or said nice deer and let it go at that, but hey, it was Bart and he always deserves a good shot. I think you made a good choice not getting that place, the stigma hangs a long time in Cambridge. Heck, Harold Hall's shop has been gone for years and everybody still calls that house his shop when we give directions! Where is your shop? I'm guessing near Oak Creek on the way to St Micheals? I head down that way Wednesday evenings for my gun building group, I'll stop in sometime and say hi.

I will tell ya like I tell some of my favorite clients.. You guys who know what to look for and appreciate what you get are the best thing going!! 85% just walks in looks at the rack ,thanks c-ya next year...
Take care man..
A gentlemen brought me an older green wing teal mount to fix up. All the locals tell me it was a Harold Hall mount with the cork behind it..Never met him.
