Snakehead Pro is holding a competitors choice(rod or bow) catch and kill snakehead tourny on the Potomac River on June 14th. www.snakeheadproshop.com/snak...ournaments.aspI pointed out to them that bowfishing is not legal in Maryland for snakeheads. Only the Virginia Tributaries. 75% of them are on the Virginia side so it would not be a big problem. One concern would be if the tourny was held at a Maryland ramp or marina on transporting them across the state line by boat?

Where does is say in the MD regs that you can't harvest a snakehead with bow gear? Just curious. I thought it would be legal.

ok boys what the hell is a snakehead WHAT? Never heard of FRANKENFISH? Never seen the movie? Why legend has it, it'll walk 5 miles, uphill, thru scorching hot sand, just to take a bite outta your @$$! (Highly out of proportion to the reality, but quite tasty none the less) (Another Asian import, like our sika deer. Plan your hunting and fishing trips here well, and you too can dine on MD Surf and Turf , invasive style!)

I'd be interested in going... The reg's don't technically say you can't shoot em in MD but they don't say you can either.

He caught that in a small creek off of the Potomac using a bass lure. He thought he had a monster.
BTW...You must kill any snakehead you catch in MD. Couldn't you always catch it with a rod & use your bow to kill it? ;D

Where does is say in the MD regs that you can't harvest a snakehead with bow gear? Just curious. I thought it would be legal. The regs are quite specific on what you are able to shoot. I have been told quite clear that it is illegal even though they are not wanted. (b) A person may take or shoot carp, garfish, skate, bullfish, shark, oyster toads, swelling toads, American eel, sea lamprey, sting rays, or any other ray fish with a spear gun and spear at any time. There is a bill in there right now that if passed will allow Fish and Wildlife to make their own decisions. As of now they are not able to add species even if it is an unwanted invasive. Potomac River Fisheries Commission will not answer my e-mails to give me their stand on the issue. here are the words from the lady in charge. Mary Groves has been great at helping as well as just answering my questions about the species. Hi Steve, it depends on what kind of information you are looking for. I may be able to help you, we've been collecting info on snakeheads ever since they showed up in the Potomac. If I can't help you I should be able to direct you to the person who can. Our legislative liason in Annapolis contacted me yesterday and told me that there is currently a bill under consideration (HB #630) that would give Maryland DNR management authority over nuisance non-native or naturalized species through regulation. This would include snakeheads. If it passes, we could start the process of trying to get the regulation changed to include snakeheads in the list of species that can be taken by bow. The process would go much faster if we can get it changed through regulation instead of having to go through legislature like we currently have to do. HB#630 would be voted on by the end of this legislative season so we should have an answer at least by the end of April. I believe we would still need to have a period of public comment before it could actually be signed as a regulation, but it would still go faster than having to wait until the next legislative session in 2009. So, we have to wait to see if HB 630 passes. Best Regards, Mary Groves

who is to say we don't just take some rods with us... and "CATCH" the snake heads on fishing poles, then according to MD regs we then killed the fish, got bored and we went bow fishing afterwards? ?? sounds like a loop hole even i could get through.........

Bowfishing is the least trusted, least respected and least liked of the sporting community by the departments. Even with all the good we do removing cownose and common carp from the water. Simple fact is you never know when or where you are being watched. Bowfishers draw allot of attention since you most likely are the only one out there doing it and possibly the first time someone has seen a bowfisher on the water. Not that hard to tell the difference between a shot and gaffed as well. To shoot a snakehead on the Maryland side where it is illegal as of now(hopefully not for long) and not just hunt on the Virginia side is not worth it to me. I would rather not risk loosing my boat, hunting and fishing privileges and a fine for a fish. 80% of the fish reside in the Virginia Tributaries anyway.

I've seen small ones. They were in 1' of depth. But the biologist said you should be targeting weed edges in 2-3' of water. Not the easiest shooting for sure. They like where different kinds of weeds or structures merge.
