Since someone else was talking about this i saw this today Posted on February 25, 2008 PALMER PARK, Md. (Feb 25, 2008) -- Local and State law enforcement officials met in Prince George’s County today for a press conference at the County Police Headquarters to announce a new initiative to combat street racing. The Prince George’s County Police Department, Sheriff’s Office, Office of Public Safety and County Executive, the Maryland State Police and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office announced plans to work cooperatively to combat street racing on roads such as Route 210 and Route 301, which cross jurisdictional boundaries, as well as other roads in each county where street races could or are known to occur. Their efforts will also address general speeding in their respective jurisdictions. “Although street races do not occur in Charles County at the rate they did many years ago, we know it is an illegal activity that still happens here from time to time. We also know far too many motorists speed from county to county,” said Sheriff Rex Coffey. “We will be working on some enforcement efforts with our neighbors in Prince George’s County to tackle the problem from both ends and hopefully put a stop to this dangerous behavior.” The law enforcement agencies say they will share ideas, information and resources. They also say they plan to conduct joint operations to address street races and speeding. State legislators are also expected to introduce a number of bills in coming days to address the illegal street racing epidemic. The Feb. 16 crash in which eight spectators were killed while watching a street race remains under investigation by the Prince George’s County Police Department Now this is CRAP what about the open air drug markets in laplata less than 1 mile from the police station how about the carloads of criminals that go across the PG and Charles county lines daily why dont we stop something that MATTERS like drugs and robberies? ? This is the most screwed up thing ive ever heard of !!!!!!!!! Has anyone been to the mall lately?? screw that i havent been there besides Dicks in at least 2 years this place is on its way down the toilet and its all because of lawmakers and county officials who look the other way towards the $$$$$$$$$

I laughed like hell last week at a piece in the paper where PG county cops were saying that these guys had gotten so "sophisticated" that they were hard to catch (using scanners, 2ways,cell phones etc)
Sheriff Coffey basically said "How the hell sophisticated were they? They let a car get up behind them and mow them down! Don't sound too sophisticated to me."
I feel for the little kids who were out there and can't imagine what kind of parent would have them out at 0300.
But as for the rest of them...
Sometimes stupid hurts.

Thats another good point, if i would spank my kid at school for doing something wrong id have CPS at my door wanting to take them away but i saw the woman on the news say that she and her 6 year old barely got out of the way WTF when was the last time you saw a state trooper on 210??? how about PG cops running radar??? and i dont know but maybe the abundance of tire marks in that 1 spot that just keep getting darker could clue them in to something going on there??? im just waiting to see who sues who first in this whole thing

From what I understand, it wasn't the race that killed anybody, but the spectators standing in the road.

Had my house robbed once caught the 2 who did it very little of my property recovered one got 6-9 months other 2-3 yr's his 2nd offense no restitution for me i think street racing is a small concern to what else is going on in our state and Charles County is getting worst by the day.

the car the hit the people was there watching the 1st race and left only to race his buddy in another police auction car while turning his headlights on and off doing 100 mph. 7 died on the scence, so how fast do you think he was going? He hit over 13 people as well. 8 dead total. Ive been to many of these races and they are USUALLY sophisticated. The races where over when this happened. There is alot to this story, so be careful who you cast the majority of the blame on.

I used to race at V street the Metro and on 210, as well as budds creek, when i was younger never saw anyone get hurt street racing, there might have been a fistfight over money or something like that but no accidents. Ive seen more cars hit the wall at Budds creek. They say he couldnt see because of the "smoke" from the race but who the hell drives into a cloud of smoke when you cant see through it?? how about all the cars that were lined up down the shoulder wouldnt that make you slown down a little?? I also heard he doesnt even have a valid drivers license, I HATE seeing the ex-cop cars with the rims on them flying up and down the road all the time!! Maybe if the county is so concerned about all the street racing that supposedly is terrorizing the community then they should build a racetrack and make some money off of us. How much money is the white plains golf course losing every year? That is owned by the county. The ice rink in Waldorf the guy was going out of business and the county bought it for a million i think. I would think there would be more revenue made from a 1/8th mile racetrack in Charles county

from what i have read the driver passed all alcohol and drug test and is not being charged with any crime in this case what if it would have been some grandmother or anyone else driving down 210 at that hour are they at fault for simply using a public road for what it is intended for in the first place which is driving, its a tragedy but the spectators should not have been in the road looking at the cars insted of looking at the highway behind them, and it doesnt matter if the county has a race track open all year round it is alot easier to just load the car up on the trailer and go out to 210 and ran one race for money than to wait around until the next morning or the next day and go to the race track and the fact is that street racing there is no registration fees to go race its free, im not saying the street racers are at fault and that street racing is horrible its been around for years there would have been no deaths and no tragedy if the spectators would have stayed on the shoulder and away from the road.

I am sick of hearing how everyone the media interviews "want answers" and "someone needs to be held responsible" Responsible for what?? Your answer is people were standing in the middle of the road! Thats why they got hit...WTF

I say the spectators are the ones who should be held responsible. I heard an interview of a lady who was there saying she and her five year old were almost hit. Who in the @#$% has a five year old at a street race at 3:00 in the morning? Lock that dumb #$%@ up.

The fat lady sang that knight, everybody there knew it was against the law that's why they were doing it @ 3:00 in the morning. It's not like it was a airplane crash. This was planed and a plan went bad. Everybody there is responsible. Live with it and move on. Or the state will get sued for having a road straight enough to let this happen,

I thought I heard someone say the victim's families were thinking about suing the county for not patrolling an area known for street racing.
