I have a pond with more snapping turtles than I can count. I see here how you are NOT supposed to catch them. My question is: legally how ARE you allowed to catch them? I need some of them gone. There is one the size of a coffee table.

Thanks, we just dug another pond last week and it already has them in there too. I don't mind a few but what we have is ridiculous. When you are trying to fish the pond 90% of the time you are dodging turtles. You can't use fishbites in there or they hit your line every time. Hunks of menhaden gets them too. About the only thing they don't hit is worms and bass lures. So far..... I had one take a flounder rig I shouldn't have been using anyway, I was just too lazy to take it off my pole and switch to bait. Got my lure.....

This morning I was cleaning stalls and when I went to spread in a field not even near the ponds there was a snapping turtle just sitting there looking at me. I'm telling you, we have some turtles! No one has answered my question though. What is the legal way to catch them?

Trap. Got to leave some air space up on top. Lewis Quarles used to make/sell some nice ones but he passed away a few years back. Should be able to make one up out of rebar and wire pretty easily.
*** I know the commercial guys trap. NOT sure what rec regs are.

Thanks. I have a snapping turtle cage left over from the previous owner. I don't know if I have the heart to do it. They look so sad when you put them in there.... They remind me of that thing on the movie The never ending story for some reason. I personally can't live line spot either though. When I feel them get nervous I pull them away from the mean old rockfish... That's why I sling plastic.

As far as I know, it is everything but what is illegal. Basically traps is about it. Catch them, but be careful cause they will still be alive. The traps are sort of like BIG minnow traps, but instead of wire they are normally made out of nylon. Like davep said, you have to be sure to leave an air pocket at the top. That would normally be done by putting something to keep it afloat - like a piece of foam.

Shilo, I can help you out with this problem. I have a quarles turtle trap and they work great. Probably catch three to four turtles at a time. Me and Buckmaster were thinking of coming down Sat. the 22nd. I can bring the traps and if you have one I'll set that as well. Good eating! Now let me wipe the drool from my mouth.

I made a couple of turtle traps back home we had a problem with too many red eared sliders.. Just pretty much a box made out of 12 inch shelf boards put a rim around it two boat bumpers to help it float and two ramps coming off the side when they climb up to sun on it its 50/50 they either jump into the box or into the water!! pretty simple

Come on down Hardcore, it will be good to see you even if you don't kill anything. Last night Heather and I were outside about 9:30pm and we saw a truck up on the hill hooking up a boat. We drove up there to see who it was and about three boats down from that one, there was a herd of deer just laying in the field chilling out. Even with all that noise from those guys they weren't even getting up. They didn't even get up when we were looking at them with our truck running. Dumb, Dumb deer. Don't they know what time of the year it is?

I guess I forgot my one rule........ I know it is necessary to thin the herd and I am ok with that. But........... please don't show me your "catch." Looks too much like a horse (the deer, not the turtles) and it makes me really sad. I start petting them, doing CPR, it's too much for me. OK? We are having a fishing tournament here in October. You guys should get in it.
