Interesting. From what I've read,an individual buck will drop within 48 hours of the same time every year. Some drop as early as late December, and I 've seen them into March (8 and a 10 together on March 17,1990-Lower Marlboro Rd-they were THAT nice that I remember) In one of his books,Leonard LeeRue( FAMOUS photographer) states that when he was working as game keeper on a preserve, that one day you couldn't take the antlers off aspecific buck with a baseball bat,and two days later a twig would take them off.So timing is everything. Have never had much luck looking for them, but have found a few while doing something else.Usually while bushhogging! Here's my prize find this year.Found it on Assateague while sika hunting.Look close so you don't miss it! ( was answering nature's call, and happened to see it amonst the cactus!) Also found a nice 3 pt whittail shed. Neither had a single bit mark on them. (I should have put something there to show the size. It'll almost fit on a quarter!) Now,I've got to find a button shed!

I found a different kind of antler trap pic. Looks pretty cool. A simple antler trap can be fashioned from a little hog wire and rebar to help remove the sheds. Stake the hog wire in the shape of 2 or 3 tight “V” shapes. Pour corn or other bait in the very back of the “V” so that the buck has to push his horns into the wire to reach the bait. If the antlers are ready to drop, they’ll come right off when they hang up in the wire. Stake the wire down lightly so that if the antlers are not ready to drop, the buck will not become trapped.

Interesting. From what I understand, when the antlers are ready to fall off, they just fall, and it happens pretty fast. Guess you have to hope he is pretty close to ready when he gets hungry.

That is a crappy camera phone pic, but it shows the trap pretty good. I put that one in the middle of a thirty acre pine thicket. I followed deer tracks in the snow and found a small opening where six different sets of tracks intersected. Way to thick to hunt in the thicket so hopefully its still holding some bucks. I'll give it a week before i check it and re-bait it. I also bent the corners over so if they pick there head up when backing out it will rub the fencing. Put up a second one today at an established baiting site I have been baiting since August.
