Great morning, but short. I got in the woods late this morning after putting my daughter on the school bus. It was about 10 after 7. Within five minutes I was on a bird, or should I say he was on me. I didn't have time to put out my decoy or even put in a mouth call. I struck the box call and he was within a 100 yards. Picked a spot and sat down, loaded the gun, and made one more call only because I could only see about 35 yards out in front of me and I wanted to check his location. He was within 60 yards out in front. Shortly after that, I saw him. He came to me and at about 25 yards, I gave him a tooth ache. He never once, strutted. The hunt was over in about 10 minutes total. He was about 15-16 lbs. and the beard was 5 inches long. Not a big bird but, He will do. I went to the other side of the farm to try and location other birds, for tomorrow but don't hear a bird. I am going to take my buddy tomorrow, he never taken a bird before. I hope it is as good as today was.

I ALWAYS take the easy ones: I look at them as a gift, and as a sort of makeup for all the ones that outsmart, outmanuever, and just plain out luck me!
Congrats!

Just wondering who is having good luck so far and about the number of birds everyone has seen and/or heard? What time of day, early or late morning? Were they in full Strut, were they gobbling or were they coming in silent? The deer field report seemed to work good during deer season, and your turkey report (whether good or not so good) would be great to hear.

The two we killed yesterday were Jakes that came in completely silent. They came running in and I was able to get them to gobble once about 50yds out. Once they saw the decoys, the ran over and strutted at about 20yds when my dad poped the lead bird. That only leads me to believe that there is at least one mature birds in that set of woods. On the way out, I got a longbeard to give me two courtesey googles and that was it. That was at 10:30. I don't know if I would have been able to work him or not?

BBD congrats. I'd love to have a quick hunt like that. It doesn't happen that often, for me at least. Field report: 4/19/07- Heard nothing, saw nothing. Which I had more to share.

Had a bird gobbling this morning before it was light enough to shoot. I was able to get fairly close before setting up my decoys. I sat there for 10 minutes or so just listening to him gobble. Once it was light enough I cut a few times then yelped on my mouth call and he went crazy. We called to each other for a good 20 minutes. I couldn't get him to come in. Maybe he was henned up, I don't know. After that, I moved down about 600 - 700 yards hit the mouth call and got two more birds to answer up. Moved in a little and set up. They answered my calls for another 20 minute and then just quit. Never heard another bird.

4-21-07 Birds starting sounding off at 5:45. I had snuck in a half hour earlier and happened to be standing 100 yards from where they were roosted. Two gobblers up on a flat and a third a half mile away. Set up my decoys in a slight valley between two hills. Started soft calling and theyflew down off roost at 6:15. I immediatly saw one tom, long beard, white head. He was on top the hill 50 yards away, strutting and gobbling. I could no longer use my slate call (because he was so close), and was worried he would circle to my right where it was thick and no shot would be available. After a few minutes, I was impatient and hit the mouth call for the first time this morning. The sound that came out was not that of a turkey. Watched him turn around and walk away.
Waited a while and went to the other side of the property, heard a gobble on the way. Misjudged the distance and busted myself. He was at the bottom of a hill and when I came over the top he kinda trotted up the hill behind him. Cool morning, but I messed up. Also saw 11 deer.

50 yards??? Tight choke and 4's or 5's that should be a dead bird!!! Birds started the exact same time for me, 5:45am, at least 10 of them. Unfortunately there was 3/4 mile, 2 clearcuts and a blacktop road (all belonging to someone else) between us. Sat in the woods until 7:30 hoping, but nothing. Around 9, after coffee, went back out and sat in the Nodak blind in the field edge with the B-mobile and a few hen decoys out. No toms, but about 11 a bunch of hens went through the woods and edge, yakking and yelping for all they were worth. They were answering me but wouldn't come out, so don't know if big boy was in tow. Pretty cool though, and a good calling lesson. Packing the truck now, off early tomorrow to Ohio. Bring on gobbling in the hills and hollows!!!! Good luck this week fellas...

If it was a 50 yard open shot, I might have took it. But there where several saplings and holly inbetween. Never a clear head shot. Good luck in OHIO! Hope you get a nice one.
